Reflection and Conclusion | postgradphysio
https://postgradphysio.wordpress.com/2014/02/14/reflection
MSc Physiotherapy (Manual Therapy) The University of Nottingham. Throughout this blog journey I have had to delve deeply into the literature in order to justify what began as a sound belief in the efficacy of manual therapy. In the past week or so, there has been debate regarding the Comparative Effectiveness Meta-Analysis by Menke (2014) (regarding spinal manual therapy for back pain) which concludes that doing something appears better than doing nothing. Analysis of the synthesis causes me to question;.

“Hands-on” AND / OR “Hands-off” ? | postgradphysio
https://postgradphysio.wordpress.com/2014/01/24/hands-on-and-or-hands-off
MSc Physiotherapy (Manual Therapy) The University of Nottingham. 8220;Hands-on” AND / OR “Hands-off”? Just when I thought I’d simplified the debate and got down to the core, I realise how naive I’ve been suggesting that peripherally mediated pain belongs to the “hands-on” camp and affective pain belongs to “hands-off”. Pain is far too complicated for that! However, it can still be questioned as to how “hands-on / hands-off” interventions effect pain? There have also been many studies supporting the conce...

Should Physiotherapists be more aware of the knowledge they possess? – Adam Smithson Physiotherapist
https://physiosmit.wordpress.com/2013/12/29/should-physiotherapists-be-more-aware-of-the-knowledge-they-possess
MSc Manual Therapy Student. December 29, 2013. Should Physiotherapists be more aware of the knowledge they possess? In my last post i left you asking yourself how do you organise your knowledge? After thinking about this myself I realised this is a much harder question than I first thought. What types of knowledge are there? How do we acquire it? And then how do we organise it? Knowing THAT something is. Acquired via articles, books, discussion and lectures etc. Knowing HOW to do something. The attributi...

Clinical Reasoning in Novices and Experts – Adam Smithson Physiotherapist
https://physiosmit.wordpress.com/2014/02/02/clinical-reasoning-in-novices-and-experts
MSc Manual Therapy Student. February 2, 2014. Clinical Reasoning in Novices and Experts. So far we have established that clinical reasoning is affected by our knowledge. Both by how much we have and how it is organised. One of the questions brought up from the last post was about the transition of knowledge. What is the transition time between having many unknown unknowns to being aware of our known unknowns? It is an instrumental process focused on finding cause and effect. The students highlighted that...
As Clinical Educators Are We Effective Teachers Of Clinical Reasoning? – Adam Smithson Physiotherapist
https://physiosmit.wordpress.com/2014/02/09/as-clinical-educators-are-we-effective-teachers-of-clinical-reasoning/comment-page-1
MSc Manual Therapy Student. February 9, 2014. As Clinical Educators Are We Effective Teachers Of Clinical Reasoning? The profession of physiotherapy needs good critical thinkers. Experiences and learning gained while on placement cannot be reproduced within the academic environment (Baldrey Currens 2000) despite the fact that students do not generally like to learn directly through the clinical situation (Gunn 2012). So how can we facilitate progress in the clinical setting? Or are we just a hinderance?

Skip to primary content. Cervical and Thoracic Spine Treatment for Shoulder Pain and Dysfunction. January 19, 2014. The analgesic effect of manual therapy techniques is considered to be a multifactorial phenomenon (Grant 2002: 234). A rapid, hypoanalgesic effect has been found in peripheral extremeties following manipulation to a spinal segment, suggested as occurring due to the activation of descending pain inhibition and endogenous pain modulation systems (Wright 1995). Although evidence to date evalua...

MSc Manual Therapy Student. November 24, 2013. Clinical Reasoning: Do you hear Horses or Zebras? After long deliberations and U-turns I finally decided on Clinical Reasoning. As the area of interest for my blog. It is a large subject area that I aim to investigate in the forthcoming posts. First off we need to understand what that phrase Clinical Reasoning. Even means as throughout the daily life of a Physiotherapist we repeatedly ask ourselves and others ‘can we reason that clinically? The latter sugges...

Postgrad Passages
A "mixed bag" of excerpts on my post grad journey. Saturday, 18 July 2015. I have never travelled to Europe before, so this is my first time being on this side of the world. My first thought: WOW. One of my favourite days in Amsterdam was renting the bikes, going to the local grocery store to pick up some olives, brie cheese, crackers, grapes, and of course lots of red wine! We rode our bikes to Vondelpark and it was incredible! Wednesday, 8 July 2015. The first two weeks of my trip I spent in the UK!

Yvonne's Journey to a Job with Heart. January 31, 2015. February 18, 2015. When you look at another person, a person with a whole life of experience that has molded and customized their thoughts, feelings and judgments, what do you see? I’m very happy for you! You must be so proud! How many small interactions have we had in our lives that positively affected someone else? It isn’t something we will ever know or be able to quantify. But every single time you leave your house, you have the opportunity ...

A frenetic look into fashion, movies, TV, and post-grad life through the lens of a (slightly sarcastic, slightly self-indulgent) twenty-something year old. Tuesday, May 7, 2013. I've crawled out of this rock I've been hiding under after a year of no posts because I just saw the photos from this year's Met gala and man was my reaction visceral. I've never been so appalled. Please Cher, turn back time! The only person worth mentioning was the lovely Carey Mulligan in Balenciaga:. Wednesday, June 20, 2012.
