Starting School – 1951 | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/04/16/starting-school-1951
Starting School – 1951. I found starting Infants School rather traumatic. I was not quite five years old. I didn’t know anyone. My older sister had already moved up to Junior School and my best friend hadn’t started school yet. I remember spending my first lunchtime crying at the school railings, wishing mum would come and get me. One day a little boy named Donald came into the class on crutches and with callipers on his legs. I think he must have been a polio victim, as it was quite rife at that tim...
An Occasion Requiring Shoes | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/05/28/an-occasion-requiring-shoes
An Occasion Requiring Shoes. This was written using the visual prompt at Magpie Tales. Glad to get home and remove those instruments of torture! I must be getting old! I mostly like to wear something comfortable, and if they are a little bit old and worn I don’t really mind. The heels on those shoes only look low, but when you’ve got to wear them for several hours they might as well be four-inch heels. These days I’m built for comfort, not speed. Turn my toes up I don’t want. 18 responses ». 01/06/2010 a...

The School Dentist | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/05/02/the-school-dentist
Many British people of my generation are scared to death of the dentist. Ask any of them why, and they will tell you horrendous tales of visits to the school dentist when they were small children. Our school dentist was situated in Player School, a short distance from our own school. I think they must have sent someone round to the individual schools to check childrens’ teeth, but I can’t honestly remember that part. I. A Midsummer Night’s Dream | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/03/23/a-midsummer-nights-dream
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is my latest journal spread. The fairy came first and then I looked for a quote in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. No major dramas with this one. 5 responses ». 24/03/2010 at 5:30 am. What a pretty image – I love the colour scheme. 23/03/2010 at 10:58 pm. Very effective. A lovely image. 23/03/2010 at 8:45 pm. April Fool’s Day | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/april-fools-day
April Fool’s Day. When I realised it was April Fool’s Day I had to have a little smile to myself. Kids, every year on the last day of March we would nick my Dad’s shoes after he had gone to bed (he went to bed early and got up early) and would replace his shoe laces with liquorice shoe laces. We thought it was a huge joke that we got him every year. We eventually all grew out of it. And tagged April Fool's Day. 9 responses ». 05/04/2010 at 2:22 am. 02/04/2010 at 2:15 pm. 01/04/2010 at 10:58 pm. You have ...
Rhubarb, Rhubarb | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/04/02/rhubarb-rhubarb
As a child I shared a room with both my sisters, Yvonne and Wendy. Wendy is eight years older than me, and Von is four years older than me. Our bedtimes were staggered appropriate to our age, so I was the first to be sent to bed and Von second. 8216;Ooooh, now what do I do? 8217; I thought. ‘I can’t stay in here until she gets back or he’ll want to know why we are both in the toilet at the same time.’. 7 responses ». 06/04/2010 at 6:09 am. The Nit Nurse | Toasted Knees
https://toastedknees.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/the-nit-nurse
I always had my hair plaited for school and I hated the nit nurse looking in my hair as she only ever undid one plait and then plaited it up again very loosely, and by the end of the day it would be sticking out all over the place. Mum always plaited super tight. Many years ago my neighbour’s kids hung over the fence and said, ‘Hey, Sue, guess what we’ve got! 8217; I was expecting a bike or a rabbit or something but it was, ‘We’ve got nits! 8217; It kept me giggling for quite some time. Postwar Germany | 1945-1949
Asymp; Leave a comment. Nuremberg trials american international law. The Nuremberg Trials are generally seen as a landmark in international law. When I first learned about the trials in school, I took for granted that they were a good thing, that the big wig Nazis got their due, and that the trials were fair, maybe even more than fair considering the men (and some women) they prosecuted and the severity of the crimes. That’s one of the topics in the fascinating article. Nuremberg: A Fair Trial? And if yo...
