POT-Pourri

Monday, November 24, 2014. A Mother, a Daughter, and a Chocolate Cake. Mama, don't start baking anything until I come back from school! I used to repeat on and on like a broken record. I loved to watch her bake; waiting for my chance to participate in any little way that she'd permit me, my favorite, of course, being licking the batter. Of all the goodies baked, the most often repeated was the Chocolate Pound Cake. Have had a minor tantrum that could. Have ticked off my mom which might. Here is a step by...

POT-Pourri: May 2014

http://www.potterybyshikha.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 5, 2014. For the Sheer Joy of Carving. Carved lantern, 2003. How did it begin? What inspired me to start carving my pots? Well, when I think back, it tickles me to recall that the earliest motivation to carve pots, resulted from a need to be able to identify my beginning wheel thrown work, from shelves full of bisque ware (work done by other beginners such as myself). All our pots looked startlingly similar. They were small, heavy and ugly! Red Earthenware platter, intricately carved, 2003.

Monday, March 17, 2014. A Friendship Sweeter Than Cupcakes! I met her five years ago. We had just finished an introductory meditation session and like always we were chatting over home baked goodies, when I noticed her. She was sitting at the back, the glow of a good meditation apparent on her face. After introducing myself, I asked her, since it was her first time, if she had any questions? So, why do I choose to write about it today? It was to be a five piece project. Three bases like the one in th...

POT-Pourri: October 2014

http://www.potterybyshikha.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 12, 2014. My Ode to Water. Most of us have a favorite comfort drink. My husband loves to start his day with a cup of chai, my mom craves her coffee at breakfast, my kids love to end their day with ginger- honey-lemon tea. But for me, the uncontested winner in the world of consumable fluids is: WATER! Drinking out of a cup made by Jeff Oestreich. I love to collect hand made cups and I have a growing collection of cups made by artists from all over the US. Cups from over 60 different artists.

My first encounter with clay makes for a rather funny anecdote. It happened on the streets of New Delhi, when, fascinated by a potter throwing on his wheel, I decided to give it a shot. In 2003 my husband's job change brought us to Round Rock TX, where I established my home studio, my own little sanctuary, where I have been playing ever since. I am a studio potter currently working out of my home studio in. My creative process results from an interplay between form and function.

Pottery by Sandy Der. By: Sandy Tags: porcelain. Ok, so I love to make kimchi, sauerkraut and pickles. I use wide mouth mason jars and half or full gallon jars. You need to weigh down the veggies to submerge them below the brine for proper fermentation but what to use? I didn’t have any small enough to fit the mouth… Rocks? Non porous, no need for glaze so no worries about heavy metals and easy to clean. I’m in. Here are some in action…they work great! Next batch will be with some brown stoneware.
