MaterialAlchemy | The exploration and making of things… | Page 2

The exploration and making of things…. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Newer posts →. November 12, 2013. I finally finished the lacquering on three guitars. Now they need to cure before I can wet sand them. I’ve been doing some odds and ends while I’m waiting. Just a little guitar stuff, like the bridges. To shape the wings, I contemplated using a small 1 belt sander I have, but I figured by the time I rigged something up to keep the bridges square, I could be finished. So I just ...

The exploration and making of things…. Skip to primary content. Making a couple rosettes. March 15, 2014. Hey, I have some time, so I’m catching up. Here is how I made the rosettes for these two guitars. I went with a geometric style. Very similar to my first rosettes. Started with humble beginnings of walnut, cherry and flamed maple. These were glued up as you see here. Then the logs were sliced and sorted. Then I played with some variations of patterns. There were a ton of permutations. These are my 6t...

It's About the Wood…. June 29, 2013. Since re-arranging my shop, I was having this….nagging feeling. Like something needed to be done, but I was purposely blocking it out. You’ve all had that feeling before, haven’t you? I didn’t take any before pics, as the camera was off-site, but here’s an old one of one of the worn sections of the bench. Then smoothing with the LV BU Smoother. And finally scraping with a card scraper. I Must Be Bored. This Woodworking Thing is Child’s Play →. Enter your comment here.

It's About the Wood…. Smallest Miter Box Saw I’ve Ever Found. May 23, 2013. I strolled into my wife’s favorite little antique shop the other day. It has all the things my wife likes, and virtually nothing that interests me. But we had time to kill, and we spent some quality time wandering through, looking and commenting on things. When I fetched the saw to the cashier to pay, she asked if I didn’t want the miter box that came with it. “No, you can keep it”, I said. “I don&...It’s Camping Season. I think ...

A look into the mind of a hand-tool woodworker. Making a moulding plan: Step 1 – The blank. I’ve started work on making my second molding plane – a # 6 hollow to match the # 6 round plane I’ve been working on for the past couple of months. As promised, I’ve been taking more photos of the process and want to give a step-by-step overview of the process in case any of my readers want to follow along. So now that you know what reference surfaces are, how should you choose which surfaces to use as references?

It's About the Wood…. Thank You Mr. Buskirk. March 16, 2013. And who is this Mr. Buskirk, you might ask? It has 8 points per inch, and it’s likely been cleaned up and resharpened a time or two. It starts a little slow, but once in the kerf it picks up speed nicely and cuts faster than my other saws. It probably has a little more aggressive set than my other similar saws, and it might need a little touch-up sharpening on the toe teeth. Yer Basic But Fun Hand Tool Project. More Efficient Dovetails →. Overh...
