americans and other half-wild animals: a digression (or, why i hate macroeconomics): a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2011/01/digression-or-why-i-hate-macroeconomics.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Wednesday, January 19, 2011. A digression (or, why i hate macroeconomics). In another article in the same magazine, they point out that we will probably cross the 7 billion mark on the planet's population in 2011. remember when we hit 6 billion? That seemed like such a scary milestone in 1999! Now we calmly look ahead to predictions of the population stabilizing at almost 9 billion by 2050. The two are related, really. i'm getting there. All of macroeconomics rests ...

americans and other half-wild animals: my heart wears a black turtleneck (or, my inner french soul): a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-heart-wears-black-turtleneck-or-my.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Saturday, December 5, 2009. My heart wears a black turtleneck (or, my inner french soul). I was having a nice conversation the other day with my tarot card reader, who happens to be french (i mean that in the real way, like born in france and even has an accent. Not the american way, like some one of his most recent 32 ancestors was french. About views on life and the like, and he said, "but you're french! The first rule is not to try and fit in.Your best approa...

americans and other half-wild animals: and so goes twenty years...: a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2011/08/and-so-goes-twenty-years.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Sunday, August 21, 2011. And so goes twenty years. I just got back from my 20-year high school reunion. I was a bit nervous - and worried - i admit it. i've changed somewhat, in what people see. i'm not nearly as skinny as i used to be, for starters. i was worried that people wouldn't recognize me, and i'd see it in their eyes as they searched for my name: ".(ohmygod-she's gained so much weight-who was she when she was thin).oh hi. Yes, of course! The beauty of that...

americans and other half-wild animals: February 2010: a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. But the other was, pilgrimage. How did this come about? Cascade head - long a place i associate with happy memories of my youth. was it totally familiar, this trail? Did i recognize every step? A pilgrimage to this place and recognized that, for me, pilgrimages are best spent in solitude, not among a large chattering group. for once i don't want to share the memories i have of this place with anyone else, while i'm reliving them. I even...

americans and other half-wild animals: california dreamin': a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2009/12/california-dreamin.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Thursday, December 10, 2009. I'm getting ready - again - to head to california soon, and i'm absolutely thrilled. i answered a little questionnaire the other day that began "what was your favorite place to visit as a child? And i had to put: california. where did i go this past summer? California. where did i go last spring, the first recreational trip since moving back to the states? That's right. california. Right there on the street! So i tried to fight it, that ...

americans and other half-wild animals: the dismal science: a blog about places
http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2011/08/dismal-science.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Finally watched a fantastic movie the other day: inside job, the oscar-winning best documentary of 2010, about the financial system crash that led to our recent great recession. Let's face it, most of the time beating up on economics or economists - even when i do it - feels a bit like kicking some poor old guy collapsed on the street. it's too damn easy, right? There are so many things wrong with economics and with the way it's used.

http://half-wild.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Americans and other half-wild animals. Monday, September 29, 2014. Testing, testing. is this thing on? 4,008 miles, one unabridged listening-through of the fellowship of the ring, a couple of albanys and a smattering of oaklands and maybe some springfields, one portland to another, about a bazillion stalks of corn, and it would appear that i have relocated to maine. Here i am. back in maine. I'm struck by how few fences there are. the houses are old and gorgeous and ramshackle and peeling and falling...

Alley Grazer: A Season of Firsts
http://alley-grazer.blogspot.com/2008/03/season-of-firsts.html
Monday, March 17, 2008. A Season of Firsts. Every year, at this time, something happens to me. Maybe when the sap begins to rise in the trees, there is an answering rise of sap in human bodies as well. This human body feels it acutely and so the counting begins. What do I count? The appearance of each new, fresh as dew, phenomenon. First Crocus. First Robin. First Dandelion. First Picnic Tables in front of Ace hardware. First sound of a lawnmower. In the spring, a harvest of perfume . A few weeks lat...

Alley Grazer: 09/01/2009 - 10/01/2009
http://alley-grazer.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Under one of the plum trees, I noticed a fresh crop of stellaria, my 2nd favorite salad. Green after arugula. It looks just like it does in the spring, little blossoms sparkling out of the grass, all ready for picking. I wonder if chickweed pesto would be a wonderful taste treat? I am thinking about. Cherry Chocolate Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce. Ur mouth every day! It is just the best feeling to know that morsel. You are chewing came directly from the earth or from God o...

Alley Grazer: Oh those cottonwoods and more
http://alley-grazer.blogspot.com/2010/04/oh-those-cottonwoods-and-more.html
Sunday, April 25, 2010. Oh those cottonwoods and more. It is that time of year again. The birds are crowding the feeder, daffodils almost done, tulips on the way. And those cottonwoods are starting the mega dump of debris onto the cars, roadways and animals. The catkins are piling up in my neighborhood. I think it is hilarious for something to be so abundant. I covered that in this post. A few years ago. Near Pismo Beach the most classic diner I have ever seen housed was housed in a couple railway cars&#...
