In 1961 Maxine Berntsen first came to India, where she worked for two years as a lecturer in English in Vivek Vardhini College, Hyderabad. From the beginning we had determined that Kamala Nimbkar Balbhavan should not be merely an oasis in an educational desert but must be a resource center reaching out to other schools in the community and beyond. Of the three units of the Pragat Shikshan Sanstha-Apli Shala, Kamala Nimbkar Balbhavan and Educational Outreach-none receives a grant from the State or Central Government.
