Improved Ecosystems: May 2014

Saturday, May 31, 2014. I didn't mow much out in the field this year and the lack of cover, in combination with their color, made the butterflies stick out like a sore thumb. I attempted to get two in the same picture, but they did not want to cooperate. I was only able to get good pictures of the docile ones. This is one of the better pictures I was able to get. Just look at how complex that color scheme is. It would truly be a shame if we, as a society, allowed this species to go extinct. U...Quite a b...

Thursday, July 31, 2014. The Pond in Summer and Trail Camera Pictures. Wildlife activity around the ponds has picked up a little and I was able to get a number of good pictures when I went back to take a look. The trail camera also picked up a few hundred pictures in the last two weeks. Further from the water's edge the plants seem to do a little better since they are not submerged during the early months of the year. This was open soil for the most part two years ago, but it has since filled in and ...

Wednesday, December 24, 2014. North Edge Prairie Final First Year Update. ProVide Clover after mowing. North edge prairie after mowing. West Edge Prairie Final First Year Update. Since there is now snow on the ground, not much will be happening that is really worth noting about the planted areas for the next few months. If I decided to remove some brush I will try to post some pictures of the areas before and after. Looking south from the middle of the planting. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. I have been ...

Improved Ecosystems: June 2014
http://improvedecosystems.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 30, 2014. With so many exciting things going on this Summer I have been neglecting to post about the native wildflower garden planted in front of the house. Although it isn't huge it terms of square-footage, it packs a punch when it comes to diversity. Just thinking about listing all of species in this planting alone seems like a daunting task. The Jack-in-the-Pulpit flowers have expired, but they have now started to set fruit. Eventually they will turn bright red and really stand out wh...

Improved Ecosystems: June 2015

Sunday, June 28, 2015. Sand Prairie in Late June. Most of the Wild Lupine has went to seed and I expect to see quite a few new plants next year. Vetch is problematic in some areas, but I don't mind it as much as some plants since wildlife seem to like it. The weather while I was working was fantastic and I didn't have any issues with mosquitos either. There was a lot of insect activity as well, but I didn't have time to get pictures. The area I planted in 2014 almost seamlessly blends in with the existin...

Improved Ecosystems: January 2015

Wednesday, January 21, 2015. First Maintenance Project of 2015. There usually isn't too much going on outside this time of year here in Wisconsin. There are the usual wildlife visitors and the scenery isn't too bad, but nothing is actively growing or changing on a daily basis. Since my encounter with Lyme disease several years ago, I have been much more responsible and cautious when it comes to undertaking large projects that require me being in hot zones of tick activity. Improved Ecosystems: March 2014

Sunday, March 9, 2014. Frost Seeding Native Seed. This past week I had the chance to plant some of the seed I collected in 2013. The seed had been stored in the garage since it was collected and I'm fairly confident there won't be too many issues with seeds breaking dormancy. The snow is still quite deep, but the seed won't have a problem reaching the soil before long. Sweet Joe Pye Weed. Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Tallgrass Expansion: Part 2. Improved Ecosystems: April 2014

Sunday, April 27, 2014. Backyard Native Garden Expansion. Last Fall I set about removing invasive grass in an area just North of an area I planted with native grasses about seven years ago. The area was almost entirely Quackgrass and it took a fair amount of time to make sure it was completely removed. Fortunately the area is sand and it is hard for plants to regenerate after a single application of glyphosate. The mowed area was sprayed. End of the 2013 before snow set in. Pretty much everything in the ...

Improved Ecosystems: Sand Prairie in July
http://improvedecosystems.blogspot.com/2015/07/sand-prairie-in-july.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Sand Prairie in July. Summer is an especially busy time of year and I haven't had much time to post about my gardens recently. Fortunately I have been taking pictures and printing out a fair amount as well. So onward to the pictures:. There are quite a few milkweed plants throughout the area and along the edges of the area I planted. I planted some Common Milkweed seed in the area a few years ago, but I am not sure if this one was planted or preexisting. The trees haven't been s...
