Farming on the Hi-Line: February 2014
http://www.hi-linefarming.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Farming on the Hi-Line. Sunday, February 9, 2014. Yep, I have sold just over half of my 2013 crop so far. All the lentils are gone and half of the wheat. It's good to finally get a pay check! Lentils being loaded for delivery. The lentils were contracted just prior to harves. Dockage was 1.7%, while defects and foreign material were 0.9%. Overall I was very happy with the results. Wheat on the way to the elevator. The last half of the wheat crop is contracted for delivery this month. I'm looking forw...

Farming on the Hi-Line: November 2013
http://www.hi-linefarming.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Farming on the Hi-Line. Sunday, November 24, 2013. Hope isn't a plan of action. One of my weakest skills as a new farm owner and operator is marketing. What is the best way to market my grain? How do I maximize my profit? I've put a lot of thought into it and sought out resources to help me over the last six months. I sold all of my 2013 crop and I would give myself a "C" grade overall. Loading lentils to haul to the elevator. It takes a market plan to turn kernels of wheat into product. Then I sat and w...

Farming on the Hi-Line: March 2013

Farming on the Hi-Line. Sunday, March 31, 2013. One thing I nearly overdosed on while in the military was training. It doesn't matter if the training is good, necessary, or usable - you still get it. Great training. First aid, surviving chemical agents, removing an aircraft engine, leadership, all more great training. Separating from the service, flag detail, casualty notification, classified data, there's training for that too. Using a ladder? Sponsoring a new Airman? First, my local. Then I found out a...

Farming on the Hi-Line: July 2013

Farming on the Hi-Line. Sunday, July 28, 2013. If that means there is the possibility of turning the furnace on at night to keep the house warm, then yes there's some summer heat on the Hi-Line. I was floating the Yellowstone River last week with family (by the way, if you haven't floated the Yellowstone in Paradise Valley, then you need to add it to your bucket list! Amazing. Twice this week it's been down to the low 40s at night. Truly amazing! Sunday, July 14, 2013. Do you have a pulse? I do I have CD...

Farming on the Hi-Line: The Great White Combine
http://www.hi-linefarming.com/2013/11/the-great-white-combine.html
Farming on the Hi-Line. Sunday, November 17, 2013. The Great White Combine. Wellit wasn't exactly THE great white combine, but it was his little distant cousin. Wheat kernels after the hail. State Hail Program adjuster checking damage. The final calculations on the damage came out to be 6.1% loss on 160 acres. I felt that the area of damage was a bit bigger, maybe around 220, 240. But after watching the adjuster do his appraisal I also felt his damage assessment of 6.1% was very liberal&#...The State Hai...

Farming on the Hi-Line. Saturday, February 23, 2013. Ma, I'm Coming Home! Well, not quite yet Ma. I don't officially retire from the US Air Force until next week. It will be my last and final promotion, having finally reached the rank of "Civilian". It still burns.except now the flow has been reversed. Finally that day is almost here. Ma.I'll be home soon. What I’m Reading. Big thoughts at Bowman. Prairie Mountain River →. September 10, 2013. Here’s those granny squares I have been working on. I’m trying to use up the last little bits of yarn from the ripple blanket, so why not make a matching pillow cover? This will be the front, with fabric for the back of the pillow case. All the squares are done and joined, but I still need to weave in the ends (most tedious of work, I avoid it) and crochet a border around it before sewing it to fabric. To encourage so...
