leaves in the hand: November 2014

http://leavesinthehand.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Saturday, November 1, 2014. Yesterday, instead of going out with friends, I went to PFoD. In a sense, our minds can be our own worst enemies, and it's within our minds that real suffering arises. To help counter the influence of greed, hatred, and delusion, as well as to distill fear, Buddhism offers four guardian meditations. Given at Wat Metta:. Or do you just want to write it off? After all, when people aren't happy, they can do cruel and miserable t...

leaves in the hand: September 2014

http://leavesinthehand.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Sunday, September 28, 2014. Noble friendship, part deux. This weekend I had the opportunity to attend my third retreat. And the second led by Sakula. The spiritual director of Portland Friends of the Dhamma. The theme of the retreat was based around the threefold practice of virtue. And how they're all integral to a successful practice. And one thing Sakula had us do was to think of something skillful we did and delight in how good it made us feel.

http://leavesinthehand.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Monday, June 22, 2015. Climate change is a moral issue. Bhikkhu Bodhi wrote a response. To the pope's recently-released encyclical on the environment, echoing the pope's call for everyone to take climate change seriously and take action:. On June 18, Pope Francis issued an encyclical letter, Laudato si. Climate change is something that affects all of us; and both argue that a collective response to it is imperative. I, for one, am inclined to agree.

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Monday, November 4, 2013. Being a buddhist doesn't mean renouncung social engagement. Surprisingly, a large number of the Buddhists I've spoken with in past few years take the position that engaging in 'worldly' issues is something that we, as Buddhists, should seek to renounce. ("Samsara is imperfect and it can't be fixed, so why bother? Update: A friend of mine gave me a book for Christmas called No Beginning, No End. And I think the first three parag...

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Saturday, January 17, 2015. On newbuddhist.com today. A university student doing some research for an essay regarding contemporary Buddhism asked, Why does Buddhism appeal to you? My answer to such questions changes depending on the day, with certain aspects taking the forefront in my mind, and today was no different. Since recently starting Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene. In such a way as to ' go against the stream. Of craving ( tahna. So looking at...

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Rules to live by: context matters and always cite/review source material. Two important things that I've learned over the years discussing Buddhism and other topics on the internet that I can't stress often enough are context matters and always cite/review source material. A great example of why these are so important occurred the other day. During a discussion about literalism and where to draw the line on NewBuddhist. Later on...

leaves in the hand: some reflections on the passing of my mother

http://leavesinthehand.blogspot.com/2015/07/some-reflections-on-passing-of-my-mother.html

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Friday, July 10, 2015. Some reflections on the passing of my mother. Even still, I wasn't really. On the flight; and with every bump of turbulence, I thought that at least my pain would end if I were to die. Midway through, they called for a doctor. Someone was having a medical emergency. I'm not sure how serious it was, but after we landed a lady was helped off by EMTs before the rest of us could exit, and I hoped that she'd be OK. While there is a low...

Leaves in the hand. One jag's thoughts on Buddhism. Monday, August 25, 2014. And the Buddha encouraged their followers to renounce the world. This doesn't mean, of course, that one must literally run away from the world and go hide in a cave. It's primarily a kind of attitude, a shift in the focus of one's life. To renounce the world is to play by a different set of rules, to go against the current. Of selfishness and craving, and live a life that others may not understand. Is not the source your pleasur...

Thursday, January 02, 2014. New Year. New Me. I loved this phrase that was taken from Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh. His sincere and simple greeting to all his disciples has the Dharma embedded in it. In words it just means. a new year has dawn, and so you must re-evaluate yourself and start a-new. You get the message. Links to this post. Tuesday, July 16, 2013. I am in the now.
