Down by the River: May 2014
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 7 May 2014. False Starts - River Usk and River Taff, April 2014. What a Difference a Day Makes. Bryn Derwen, River Usk, 12th and 13th April. It was Saturday morning. I had grilled a few cuts of Raglan pig and was relieved when Welsh exile and itinerant angler, Morgan, arrived on time. We had not fished the new beat together and, even though the river was up 15cm and (worse) there was a stiff easterly wind, I was eager to get out. 17 inch Bryn Derwen trout. Deep wading reaps rewards. Morgan is ...

Down by the River: Resurrection – March Browns, River Usk
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2015/06/resurrection-march-browns-river-usk.html
Friday, 5 June 2015. Resurrection – March Browns, River Usk. At the risk of repeating myself, it’s been a while since my last entry. Short on time, I've been forced to make the choice between fishing, tying flies and blogging - my fly boxes are also sparsely populated at the moment. Early riser: LDO feeder. Large Dark Olives (LDOs) have been less prolific in the last few years, but the March Brown (MB) hatch has steadily improved. Most sustained LDO feeders were witnessed on drizzly, windless afterno...

North Country Angler: Winter of Content

And I want to be like water if I can; water doesn't give a damn" - David Berman (2001). Thursday, January 22, 2015. The full circle journey back to wh at I left behind in the late noughties. Long hours of sear ching big pools. In cold wea ther for elusive shoals of winter. Grayling. I've loved every minute of it! Of them weighin g. Between 2 lb 2oz and 2lb 8oz, I started to question why I had ever become such a re luc t ant winter an gler in the first place. T. In search of fishable water when most of th...

Down by the River: January 2014
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 20 January 2014. Domestic Bliss, River Taff, January 2014. It was Saturday night and a text from Dan Popp indicated that the lower Taff would be fishable the following day. I needed no persuasion as the local rivers had been in spate since November. We arranged to meet the next morning at nine. At the pool Dan went straight to his favourite spot and I entered the river downstream where I caught, and missed, more small grayling on my heavy bugs. The river is currently stuffed with these 4-5 in...

Down by the River: July 2013
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 24 July 2013. Double Take - Mayfly, River Usk, June 2013. As everything on the Usk is three weeks late this year, I had some good sport with mayfly feeding fish in the early part of June. During the last week in May, I noticed a few danica whilst out walking the dog. The specimen below landed on my dog's back, which was a bad move as she turned around and ate it! Beat at 7.00pm and was delighted to be greeted by clouds of dancing spinners. 65279;. Being a member of both GAS and MTAA. As I w...

Down by the River: November 2013
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 25 November 2013. Ladies About Town - Urban Grayling, Lower Taff, November 2013. Previously on Thymallus thymallus. I have fished for river trout on the upper Taff since I was a small boy but, until a few years ago, I had not caught a Taff grayling as they only inhabit the lower river. I enjoy fishing gentlemen's hours on the urban river in winter; it's convenient (within 40 minutes drive), cheap (£10 buys a ticket for Ospreys Fly Fishers Association. Landing a Taff grayling. Down by the River: February 2014
http://downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 28 February 2014. Touching Distance - February 2014. During the wettest winter on record the local grayling fisheries were flooded for long periods, and I only managed four sessions in total. Hugely disappointing. Another winter pastime also suffered as I didn't do much ferreting. To make matters worse Nel, my lurcher, has a severely damaged back leg and will be permanently lame. I think a lot of the bitch and this is a bitter blow. Long netting an orchard. LBD / MB Nymph. Reading John Goddard's ...

Fly-fishing is solitary, comtemplative, misanthropic, scientific in some hands, poetic in others, and laced with conflicting aesthetic considerations. It is not even clear if catching fish is actually the point. – John Gierach, Dances with Trout (1994). In the Fishing hut.
