Brandon's Big Year in Birding. Thursday, October 24, 2013. Birding at Whitefish Point.and Other Stuff. I have always been old. I've often joked that I'm an 80 year old stuck in a 29 year old body. My back hurts, I'm often cranky, and I'm constantly running to the bathroom to make my bladder flatter. Whitefish is that narrow peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald was 17 miles away from Whitefish Bay when it sunk into the depths of the lake also known as gichigami. Elissa and I a...

Brandon's Big Year in Birding: September 2013
http://brandonsbigyear.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Brandon's Big Year in Birding. Sunday, September 29, 2013. The answer to this question, as far as I'm concerned, is who cares? For you non-birders, there are rules when listing birds. Game birds such as these Northern Bobwhite are often released and are not "countable" according to the American Bird Association (ABA). Because I have no intention of turning in my list into the ABA at the end of the year, the Northern Bobwhite will show up on my list at bird #266. Wednesday, September 25, 2013. I decided t...

Brandon's Big Year in Birding: January 2014

Brandon's Big Year in Birding. Friday, January 24, 2014. My Big Year by Numbers. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Oak Openings 1/24/2014. Anyways, it's taken me this long to sit down and analyze my year. Although the biggest joys of my Big Year can not be quantified, numbers are nevertheless seemingly significant in such an endeavor. Here are a few that I thought were interesting enough to mention. 8: At the beginning of the year I had recorded 209 different kinds of birds in my birding "career." Of that nu...

Brandon's Big Year in Birding. Saturday, December 28, 2013. Rio Grande Valley: Day 2. Bentson was a little disappointing. We did not see a lot of birds in general, but I was able to add Black Phoebe and Loggerhead Shrike to the list. Here are a few pics from today. The lighting for photos continued to be poor, but tomorrow will hopefully be sunny and 70 degrees. Going up river to Falcon Dam. Once again.I can't wait! Not a pile of leaves. Brandon's Big Year in Birding: Species Spotlight: The Morning Dove
http://brandonsbigyear.blogspot.com/2015/02/species-spotlight-morning-dove.html
Brandon's Big Year in Birding. Friday, February 27, 2015. Species Spotlight: The Morning Dove. My wife suggested that we research a bird species each month and write a little something about the chosen bird. She has kicked it off with the common and beautiful morning dove. I personally got a kick out of reading her article. I hope you enjoy it too! Juveniles may also be confused with ground doves or inca doves. By 3 months old juveniles resemble adult birds.
