Experimental Textiles 6. Dyeing with naturals and synthetics. November 17, 2014. November 17, 2014. Really enjoyed this weekend of experimenting with dyes, and of course, celebrating a birthday with yet more cake and a nice meal out. Synthetic fabrics cannot be dyed with Procion dyes, so transfer dye was painted onto papers in block colour and various designs. The colours turn out very different to how they go on, so most of us had no idea what would happen! A bad case of piles…. November 11, 2014. This ...

Black and White in Bakewell. September 23, 2016. Bakewell is famous for the Bakewell pie or pudding. I hate it as I don’t like almonds. There are so many pie shops in the small town centre but I can forgive that as it’s very peaceful and pretty with the river running through. We just sat gawping back at the size of the rainbow and brown trout in the river Wye a few feet away, and so many of them! But now to arty endeavours and my ‘bag of unruly thoughts’ (India Flint) that I took away with me. My hea...

December 2014 – Folio and Fibre
https://folioandfibre.wordpress.com/2014/12
December 24, 2014. December 24, 2014. Our embroidery guild has a small ongoing project for the year, to make a stitch sampler by sewing a particular stitch each month. I decided to chop up a favourite pair of jeans and choose little areas of interest to stitch on. Some pieces have seams and others are almost threadbare and very faded. I really love using paper and fabric together so this just scratched my itch, rusting-printing both to make the cover:. December 14, 2014. December 14, 2014. Well another t...

Seascapes with Laura Edgar – Folio and Fibre
https://folioandfibre.wordpress.com/2015/06/27/seascapes-with-laura-edgar
Seascapes with Laura Edgar. June 27, 2015. June 27, 2015. I wasn’t going to post so soon, but following a lovely workshop in Newcastle, I thought I’d just share these photos. I have been following Laura for a while and love her colours and the way she creates painterly abstract pieces. She is a real whizz at manipulating fabric and layering up colours on which she uses mostly free hand stitching to blend or add accents. One of my neighbour’s piece…. A few lovely textures and colours from the day:. It is ...

The Shape of Things to Come. July 31, 2015. July 31, 2015. With much excitement, I travelled down to the Cotswolds to the Textile Study Group summer school this week. I think it took me five minutes to pack my clothes, and most of a day to pack my art materials. The venue was abosulutely stunning…. Our Coach House studio. This one has words of a poem stitched into it. I used some stiffened silk to make tiny trial shapes. Inside outside, different perspectives. Could I show loss, or transition? A very hai...
