Tools for modelling long-term retention and access of digital data. The tools are designed to help answer a range of questions about using IT systems to store, preserve and provide access to digital assets:. How many copies should be made? What technologies should be used? What are the long-term risks of loss? How much will it cost? What impact does the choice of codec have? Access: 'just in time' transcoding or create proxies in advance? How often should data be checked to make sure integrity is intact?

For a walk-through of how to use this tool, please see our report on preservation modelling tools. Please enter your username in the box below. If you do not already have a username then you need to create one so that any model data you create can be saved. This can be done simply by choosing a name of anything you like that is unique to you, putting it in the box above, then pressing 'Log In'. No password is needed. This tool works in Firefox and Chrome but not in Internet Explorer.

MServe is a RESTFul Web Framework for Service Providers. Its purpose is to provide human and machine usable interfaces to control the ingest, access, processing and manipulation of content using compute resources. There are 3 main interfaces in MServe:. HTML (web browser) interface for human manipulation of the content;. HTTP/REST interface for machine workflows and automated systems;. WebDAV interface to provide file system access to the content. MServe has its own website with full documentation.

Ting is a general service monitoring and management framework. It can be used by a service provider to offer services to customers, and to monitor and manage their use of these services. It can also be used by customers to monitor and manage their use of resources. Ting integrates with MServe. Receiving all the data on the service usage and controlling MServe according to SLA policies. Ting is also integrated with iModel. The Ting-core library can be downloaded from IT Innovation.
