This course will be concerned with the application of current knowledge of dialect differences to reduce the minority differential in reading achievement. Members will conduct projects and design computer programs to reduce cultural distance between teachers and students in local schools and to develop knowledge of word and sound structure. The Netter Center for. About The Reading Road. The Reading Road is a tutoring program designed to raise achievement levels of struggling readers in low income schools. Introduction to the basic sound-to-letter correspondences of the English alphabet. Activities for focusing children's attention on the more complex, many-to-one and one-to-many, sound to letter correspondences. Take Home Stories narratives printed out as separate books for the student to take and read to folks at home.

The Netter Center for. Bill Labov is Professor of Linguistics and Psychology at Penn. From 1977 on, he has taught academically based service learning courses, L160 Introduction to African American and Latino English, and L161, The Sociolinguistics of Reading. He is the one of the principal researchers on African-American Vernacular English, and the author of Language in the Inner City (1972), Principles of Linguistic Change (1994, 2001) and the Atlas of North American English (2006).
