Primarily Teaching

January 24, 2015. How could we improve on Guided Reading? Guided reading is fun. I love teaching it. Spending a half hour chatting about literature and scribbling on whiteboards with a small group of children while the rest beaver away in silence is the closest we can get to a break in class :). But I worry about it. How much impact can one 30-minute session a week have on children? Wouldn’t it be better if children were reading purposefully every day? Monday – vocabulary and decoding. 8211; Introduce an...

Daily Archives: July 5, 2014. July 5, 2014. Routines for New Teachers. Classroom management is all about expectations (obv). The trouble is, if, like I was when I started teaching, you’re plunged into the deep end with little support, you don’t know what expectations you’re supposed to have. You certainly don’t know what high expectations look like. And if you don’t know what it looks like, there’s no way in hell you can achieve it. The result? Ask them to pretend to talk to their partners and repeat!

Daily Archives: August 11, 2014. August 11, 2014. Inclusion is a thing, not a place. So the number of Special School places is rising. But, wait-‘ I hear you splutter, ‘Isn’t that a bad thing? You know, inclusion and shit? No And let me tell you for why. Inclusion is an unhelpful word, without a context. To me, the whole thing only makes any sense at all if we talk about ‘inclusion in education’: how can we most include a child in the process of being educated? And if we pursue the latter (which we shoul...

Daily Archives: August 9, 2014. August 9, 2014. Don’t tell me what I do! I *hate* being told what I do. Not what. Do, I don’t mind that. But people saying, ‘This is what primary school teachers do.’ It’s invariably bollocks, but even if it wasn’t, I’d still hate it. Even when I agree with it, it annoys me. Generalisations suck. These are some of the charges levelled at primary teachers about ‘what we do’:. For instance, when someone says ‘primary schools teach way too much through play! Whatever you do, ...

Granola bar sized hurdles – The Rare Teaching Bear

https://rareteachingbear.wordpress.com/2015/02/20/granola-bar-sized-hurdles/comment-page-1

The Rare Teaching Bear. The life of a male NQT in a Primary school…. February 20, 2015. February 20, 2015. Granola bar sized hurdles. Due to my girlfriend being wheat intolerant she cannot eat many varieties of cereal bars and so making our own was a cracking option. She made a batch one week and then I was left in charge to make some the following week (which she later regretted due to my ‘rough’ measurements and mess I made). Naturally I thought it was the perfect thing to photograph. Yes I did actually.

The Rare Teaching Bear. The life of a male NQT in a Primary school…. January 5, 2015. January 5, 2015. New Year, new me? I have never been a believer in New Year resolutions. Always the same ones each year and I imagine if people were successful in their annual pilgrimage to be better then there would be new ones that crop up on the 1st January. Also, I joined the gym in October, so I am sure that counts for something, right? And here is a picture of a cat made from an orange. January 5, 2015 at 4:11 pm.

The Rare Teaching Bear. The life of a male NQT in a Primary school…. November 19, 2014. November 19, 2014. Can I make the cake and eat it? But then here comes the real ‘ba-doom-boom’ of the story…. Never used this before. but the idea of this is rather sweet (do not mind the pun). I took them to school the following day and when I whipped one out in the staffroom the smell of milkshake seemed lure some peoples noses my way. “Did you make them yourself? Did your girlfriend make them? To Insta, to Insta not.

The Rare Teaching Bear. The life of a male NQT in a Primary school…. January 31, 2015. January 30, 2015. Male Toilets – the “dumping” ground. As life goes and all that, this changed the following week. I had my interview for a School Direct placement and had an internal maths/english test to complete at a local school. This proved fairly challenging not only because it was a test but because I needed to go toilet from the moment I got in there! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. You are...

The Rare Teaching Bear. The life of a male NQT in a Primary school…. April 29, 2015. April 28, 2015. A true Robin Hood week. Saw Enfield Town play a playoff deciding match with some of my colleagues and 40 of our kids. New Avengers film; absolutely cracking, even featured my old Uni, which definitely increases the cracking effect. Went to White Hart Lane on Friday for a day out for a course (work apparently). A impromptu dinner at Loch Fyne to celebrate my long awaited haircut. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Primarily Singing + SEMINARY!

Recycled and repurposed gospel teaching ideas. Monday, February 12, 2018. Lesson 107; Helaman 3-4 Valentines Day. Needless to say, Seminary is keeping me BUSY, and I don't have much time for 'splainin' why I'm not consistent. Haha. My class loves post-it notes. I've discovered a simple way to make them (I shared the link to the how-to a couple of post back). I've included here the link to a blank page a link to a printed page that goes with this particular lesson (#107! Blank Post-it template HERE. If I ...

No one imagines that a symphony is supposed to improve in quality as it goes along, or that the whole object of playing it is to reach the finale. The point of music is discovered in every moment of playing and listening to it. It is the same, I feel, with the greater part of our lives, and if we are unduly absorbed in improving them we may forget altogether to live them.
