Thursday, November 10, 2005. Oboe and english horn questions. I was listening to the oboe and english horn on Mr. Watras's. The problem with the deffinition is that it doesn't clearly explain the difference between that instrument and the brass instruments. 1 oboe di caccia is an ancestor of the englis horn. 3 they are both in the woodwind section and they both have a double reed. 4 the english horn plays lower notes than the oboe. Mr Watras does not like the definition that Hayley Iben gives because it does not say that a woodwind has a complex airstream. One of the first ancestors of the English horn was the Shawm. The English horn was not originally created in England, it was created by the Hotteterre. The English horn is longer than the Oboe and makes a deeper sound and lower pitched than the Oboe.
