the Prodigal PhD

A journey back into academia. Friday, May 8. Two steps along the long road. My second semester of this reconsidered walk of life has come and gone. The popular imagination of a meek scientist has just become unconjurable for me, for I believe there is nothing meek about discovery, invention and creation. We are plopped into our jungles, machete at the ready, vague map to the coast, feeling and breathing in the new land. "Meek" cannot even be formed from the available alphabet. I am at peace. the Prodigal PhD: Reading in.

http://prodigalphd.blogspot.com/2008/04/reading-in.html

A journey back into academia. Wednesday, April 23. A big problem I face as I restart my academic career is getting a sense of the state of the art.  I've kept a weather eye on the field, and dabbled here and there over the years with various AI (or AI-like) programming, but nothing ultra elaborate and certainly not long-term research worthy. The Society of Mind. The Emotion Machine: Commonsense Thinking, Artificial Intelligence, and the Future of the Human Mind. 160; by Marvin Minsky. 160; by Jeff Hawkins.

the Prodigal PhD: So it begins.

http://prodigalphd.blogspot.com/2008/08/so-it-begins.html

A journey back into academia. Sunday, August 24. Last week, classes began. Words fail to describe how I felt, finally being there. A new gestalt tag for me, certainly: Keith McGreggor, PhD student. At long last. Wow! This semester, I'm taking 12 hours, divided among three classes:. CS 7001 Introduction to Graduate Studies. CS 8803 Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence. CS 8903 Special Projects (with Ashok Goel). Your journey is for sure inspiring and one I would for sure be able to take as well.

the Prodigal PhD: Shiny, Happy Programs

http://prodigalphd.blogspot.com/2008/06/shiny-happy-programs.html

A journey back into academia. Sunday, June 1. Shiny, Happy Programs. For the past few weeks, I have been enjoying Dr. Ashok Goel's Design Intelligence Lab workshop. The discussions have been terrific, and we are working toward a rather interesting taxonomy and theory of intelligence. A part of this workshop is that we are working our way through Marvin Minsky's latest book, The Emotion Machine. This set me thinking: are programs "happy"? Does it really have a "goal" of performing its tasks? Subscribe to:...

the Prodigal PhD: Neural Darwinism

http://prodigalphd.blogspot.com/2008/06/neural-darwinism.html

A journey back into academia. Sunday, June 1. Just finished reading Gerald Edelman. S latest book Second Nature: Brain Science and Human Knowledge. It's a summary of his theory of Neural Darwinism. A method for describing the emergence of consciousness (primary and higher consciousness) through the selectionistic evolution of brain structures. Very fascinating, provocative, and utterly coherent. Wondering now how to construct an intelligent architecture based upon it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

GT VentureLab: 2009-07

http://blog.gtventurelab.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 27, 2009. VentureLab merges with ATDC. Since 1999, the state-funded ATDC Seed Capital Fund has made equity investments in Georgia startup companies alongside angel investors and traditional venture firms. With this new merger, ATDC will also manage the Georgia Tech Edison Fund, an innovative investment fund established in 2007 which draws its resources from charitable donors who are interested in helping expand the entrepreneurial ecosystem surrounding Georgia Tech. ATDC, the former Georgia ...

GT VentureLab: It's the Execution, not the Idea that Matters

http://blog.gtventurelab.com/2009/01/its-execution-not-idea-that-matters.html

Thursday, January 8, 2009. It's the Execution, not the Idea that Matters. A recent Slashdot article addressed a question from a Computer Science student about whether his ideas would be 'stolen' by the University. I am not going to directly address the question or get into the explanation of University IP ownership and Bayh-Dole. I'll leave that for someone else. :-). Http:/ ask.slashdot.org/article.pl? Keep coming up with ideas though, they are great places to start. Posted by Paul Freet. This point is ...

GT VentureLab: 2009-06

http://blog.gtventurelab.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 22, 2009. There is nothing more important to a startup than customers. They are the lifeblood of a business; providing much needed cash, credibility and hope. Your first customers are always the most difficult to land. You are not a known entity. You don't have the money for any advertising. And you don't have a sales history with any customers yet. So, what to do? Go local I say. How do you find these first prospects? As a final note, you must know what is going on in your community. If...

GT VentureLab: Baseball and Startups

http://blog.gtventurelab.com/2009/05/baseball-and-startups.html

Tuesday, May 26, 2009. You've heard the 'startups are like baseball' analogy 100 times. Maybe 1,000 times. How many of those companies would have had solid base hits. Exits if the venture investors had not been swinging for the fences. To be a premier venture capitalist, one must hit a home run. For every Google-type home run. There are countless other startups that. How to get past this? Develop the skills to be a top entrepreneur and get up to bat as many times as you can. Posted by Paul Freet.

I think that needs repeating, I m not a lawyer. :-) So, please get an opinion from a true IP attorney.
