Life in Academia

Wednesday, October 01, 2014. This is the talk I gave in our college chapel service this week. Actually, it was more of a piano recital, and I've left out the narration for that part, but the following is the "meat" of the service:. I’ve had some fun with you the last week or two as you tried to pin me down on what, exactly, I meant when I said that my off-limits topic was “old.”. Did I mean old traditions, old songs, or perhaps old people? New is where it’s at. That sounds pretty good. Not a bad thing.

Life in Academia: February 2013

http://professorp.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 23, 2013. Advice to Our Government. As sequestration is looming, I have one bit of advice to all who might have a part in solving the problem:. The President and everyone in Congress is to blame, as are we, for demanding that government should do what we should do for ourselves. We Americans are not children, needing someone to tell us what is best to do with our money, our bodies, and ultimately, our lives. Sequestration would lop off about 2.5% of the increase. Mr President, this sol...

Life in Academia: First Day

http://professorp.blogspot.com/2012/08/first-day.html

Wednesday, August 08, 2012. As I shook off the last remnants of sleep this morning, I heard the school bus go down the street, scavenging for any highschooler unlucky enough to have neither a driver’s license and a car nor a friend willing to pick him up. It’s the first day of school. We would be free to do what we wanted, with no one ordering us around, no homework, and we wouldn’t be confined to a desk seven hours a day. We had no idea that we were one step closer to the ultimate disillusionment:.

Life in Academia: September 2009

http://professorp.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 11, 2009. Eight Years Ago Today. After class, we watched replays of the towers crashing. We would watch the same scenes, over and over, for days, still trying to process the idea that this was real, not cinematic special effects. No one hopes for another tragedy. Too bad tragedy was what it took to realign our values. Let’s not forget again—be the people we were 8 years ago today. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Keeping Up With Myself

http://machiavellianmusings.blogspot.com/2010/12/when-i-get-chance-i-like-to-volunteer.html

Keeping Up With Myself. Thursday, December 16, 2010. When I get the chance, I like to volunteer with high school and younger kids and try to get them interested in careers in math and science. To this end, here is my list of awesome things about engineering/math/science:. 1 Engineers often get to wear jeans to work. 2 If you are a female engineer, there is never a line for a bathroom. 3 If you go into math and science, people will always think you're smart. 7 Engineers have the funniest jokes.*. Disclaim...

http://machiavellianmusings.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Keeping Up With Myself. Friday, February 19, 2010. Reading: Tess D'Ubervilles, Penguin Classic edition. I'm a sucker for a pretty book, and the rereleased Penguin series are a serious level two contender in my collection of pretty books. (Level one is the leather bound gilded editions, Level two is pretty covers, Level 3 is unusual normal editions, like my autographed Terry Prachett books.) I'm finding James slow going, but the premise is interesting. Watching: The Olympic Games. Hating: Best Buy's coupon.

Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat,. Et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem. May Angels lead you into paradise;. May the Martyrs receive you at your coming. Keeping Up With Myself: January 2011

http://machiavellianmusings.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Keeping Up With Myself. Sunday, January 2, 2011. I love lists. (My entire family just went "duh".) One of my favorite things about the start of the year is the cultural endorsement of massive amounts of list making. As one of the things I'd like to keep up with in the new year is blogging, here's some of my favorites:. Movies that we will watch in January (from the AFI list). Home Improvements we will make. 1 Shelf in the bathroom. 3 Repaint B.J.'s office. 1 Laundry washed, folded and put away. Watermark...

Keeping Up With Myself: Today I am

http://machiavellianmusings.blogspot.com/2010/10/today-i-am.html

Keeping Up With Myself. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Recently, I've had an upsurge of gratitude about the little things, which feel more meaningful to me than all of the big things put together. Overall, I'm grateful for all of the answers to prayer that I've experienced over the past weeks, and thankful for the things that I have, without even having to ask for them. Hey you are an engineer? Like the way you write about yourself! FYI i am new here. November 13, 2010 at 12:11 PM. I'm a twenty three year ...

The Spiritual Buzzkill: Orientation

http://beejsblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/orientation.html

Sunday, October 5, 2008. It was a new start, yet it all looked and felt familiar. I tried leaving part of my past, yet it was there with me. I was there to study writing, but I was confronted by my previous studies- theology. I was there to pursue an MFA, but orientation took place in what was once a Baptist church. It was orientation. Or was it church? It is here with me now. Posted by Beej Jones. I hope it never leaves you. It's a good thing to hold on to! October 5, 2008 at 11:51 PM. A Mans Best Sign.

The Spiritual Buzzkill: And the List Grows...

http://beejsblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/and-list-grows.html

Monday, August 25, 2008. And the List Grows. Accidents and mistakes I have blamed on having low-blood sugar. 1)Fell up the stairs. 2)Fell down the stairs. 3)Fell out of the shower. 4Burned myself on hot tea. 5Spilled a glass of tea at a restaurant. 6Left a size tag on the side of my pants. 7Called a woman by her recently dead sister's name. 8Cut myself with an exacto-knife. 9Flipped off my history professor. 10Dropped an f-bomb in front of little children. 13Bought a Nelly Furtado c.d. 37Plugged my lapto...

Keeping Up With Myself: April 2011

http://machiavellianmusings.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Keeping Up With Myself. Wednesday, April 27, 2011. I am so glad that I didn't put "Write more blog posts" on my list of New Year's Resolutions. I'm not a big fan of setting myself up for failure. 1 Introducing Beej to Wishbone. Was a PBS show that came on when I was in middle school. It features a Jack Russel Terrier who reenacts classic books with himself in the title roles. There's humans in there too, but honestly, who cares? 2 Oscar Nominated movies. This past year was unusual in that a lot of movies...
