Academia 101: Read like you are eating rice
http://professorslogbook.blogspot.com/2016/10/read-like-you-are-eating-rice.html
The world of academia explained to a non-academic audience. Saturday, October 22, 2016. Read like you are eating rice. Reading papers (papers in this post mean journal papers) take quite a while. Typically, they start with an abstract and introduction followed by a literature review, methods, results, discussion, limitation and conclusion. The order could vary depending on the field, but this is a general overview. Abstract (a summary of the study). Introduction (what you are going to read). Time yoursel...
Academia 101: Introduction
http://professorslogbook.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html
The world of academia explained to a non-academic audience. No one in my family has ever been in this field and the path to becoming a researcher and professor was never quite clear to me until very recently (this knowledge and training I owe to my PhD adviser). I envy people who grew up watching their parents as academics and participated in such dinner-table conversations or got early exposure to doing research. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The world of academia explained to a non-academic audience. Thursday, October 27, 2016. Building on an abundance model. I asked if a letter of support coming from someone outside the US would be effective at all. What they said was eye-opening. 8220;Are you kidding me? You are an international scholar who has worked in both the US and Germany. A letter from you would be incredible.”. I often tend to think, “Shit! I have no experience running structural equation models.”. This email exchange taught me to ...

Academia 101: Build your processor while in graduate school
http://professorslogbook.blogspot.com/2016/10/build-your-processor-while-in-graduate.html
The world of academia explained to a non-academic audience. Friday, October 14, 2016. Build your processor while in graduate school. I spent a lot of time during my PhD (that lasted exactly 3 years) resisting whatever my adviser said. He had a clear plan for me to graduate on time, but I was the one who did not believe that I could meet my graduation deadline. As a result, we argued a lot. 8221; he said bluntly. trumspringa: Wandering heart
http://thisweekthatyear.blogspot.com/2015/04/wandering-heart.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. That sometimes has been my problem. Specially when I am in some other country. Other place. I am there and I cannot completely be there. 13 days into this trip, I am already missing my food, my people, my friends. Its like parts of me are missing. And they show up at random street corners here, during my daily run in the cemetery, while nibbling on takeout chinese food. But inside me remains a deep craving for the known and familiar. A term I learnt recently from a beloved writer.

Sunday, September 14, 2014. Satara hill marathon 2014. I can see this blog is slowly becoming a place to document running events. But as long as I keep on writing here, no one's loss right? The Satara Hill Marathon. Is an elite ultra marathon event in Maharashtra, which only in its 3rd year has already become famous for some superlative arrangements for runners and gorgeous and tough route. I ran the 10 k race there yesterday and immediately made a plan to run the half marathon next year. The live tradit...

Sunday, February 1, 2015. Shifting wifting haaye rabba. You start packing your stuff. You stumble across stuff you never knew existed. You label boxes. Make a note to use things which you still dont want to throw away. You throw away some stuff willingly. With some stuff you are just reluctant to let go. For eg. the beautiful glass bottles you collected to plant trees in. But never did anything with them for the past gazillion years, because well you never thought you would leave the house. Everything ha...
trumspringa: Notifications free
http://thisweekthatyear.blogspot.com/2015/07/notifications-free.html
Wednesday, July 29, 2015. All misc apps like drive, uber, ola, yelp etc etc. These apps were the first on the list. Then I muted all groups on whatsapp. I also left a few groups eventually (story later). The only apps where I did want to receive notifications were runkeeper and words with friends (given the frequency and liking for these app activities). So they got full reign over my notifications tab. So what's the outcome of all this cleansing? September 21, 2015 at 11:53 AM. View my complete profile.
trumspringa: Kashmir
http://thisweekthatyear.blogspot.com/2015/03/kashmir.html
Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Travelling to Kashmir has been one of my childhood dreams. It came true in an unexpected fashion last week. 1 Always check weather before entering the valley. We were well equipped with winter jackets, caps, gloves, boots, pairs of socks to tackle the untimely and delayed snowfall. 3 If staying in Srinagar, try to stay around the scenic drive around Dal lake. We set camp 5 minutes drive away from Dal. So everyday when we headed out, we would get to witness life around D...4 I f...

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Kadhi is one of my favorite staple Indian foods. I remember chilly winter evenings in Chicago when I would only make kadhi and drink 4-5 cups of it. It gave me comfort. I learnt how to make kadhi from my aaji (mother's mother). I would always tell aai, how aaji makes the best kadhi in the world and aai could take tips from her. The honesty of childhood! I am not sure how aaji, even for that matter aajoba (grandfather) took these changes. We always saw them being happy and ...

Friday, April 10, 2015. Today I got my self worth evaluated by a girl who thought I was too average looking or not smart enough to be styled by a celebrity. I am known as a nice person among friends and colleagues (family will doubt that, because they get to experience my occasional outbursts). In addition,. I have a master's degree in electrical engineering. I have aced all my exams. At work also I work hard and give 200% to everything I do. Apart from this I am also an accomplished runner. Sunday, June 14, 2015. We the people - Part deux. But watching movies was the only alone time my parents would get in a joint family. I think that's very romantic. And I think that's why aai also learnt to survive films :). And did I mention Amitabh Bacchan? Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Then we started talking about school experiences and teachers. To everyone's amazement we shared the same teachers! 2-3 to be specific, but the teachers who had just joined school were on the brink of retirement when I gradua...

Sunday, January 18, 2015. These are some really long notes about SCMM and running. Sometimes I think in my perfect world I would never register for races. Nor would I travel to different places just to be able to run in an organized fashion. Its not my perfect world, and hence for above reasons I take decisions from time to time to register for racing events and train for them with experts. Before every outstation event I go through this :. I make travel plans a month/15 days in advance. Till now (this w...
