Why is the project being funded? The long term viability of many EU high-tech industries and clean technologies has become reliant on secure supplies of rare earth materials. The short/medium term supply security is of severe concern due to both resource restriction and political concerns. China currently produces over 97% of all rare earth materials and it is predicted that Chinese domestic demand will outstrip production within the next decade. What problem does it address?
