Why I’m tired of being black | projectbebetter
https://projectbebetter.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/why-im-tired-of-being-black
Busan, South Korea. What I wanna do — I don't know yet. What I wanna be — different. Why I’m tired of being black. I know it. I accept it. I embrace it. I’m proud of it. Yet, if you asked me to choose 10 words to describe myself, black would not be one of them. One good decision led to another, so I’ve started trying to be more physically active. Sunday afternoon I decided to go to a local park to see what was happening, and that is where my story takes place. I picked up a conversation with one guy, who...

Busan, South Korea. What I wanna do — I don't know yet. What I wanna be — different. You just hit the ball over the fence – why are you afraid of running to first base? It is only fitting to go with a baseball analogy now that basketball season has come to a close. I am up to bat. The ball comes down the middle. I knock it out of the park. The defenders are still in the field. They still have their gloves on. They still have their game faces on. The ball may even come back from the stands. I was moving t...

The Fulbrighter in South Korea: May 2015
http://thefulbrighter.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 22, 2015. Yearbook Photo-Taking and Experiencing Micro Exclusions at School. Yesterday, I stayed at school past 8:00 pm creating visually-rich itineraries and editing an upcoming program to an obsessive-compulsive degree. I emerged from the computer screen-induced daze I had been in to realize that night had fallen, and I was the last one left in the gyomushil. Would I like a ride home? Snug in her small 4-door, Jane casually mentioned that the following day (today) would be picture-taking day.

Thursday, March 19, 2015. MEANWHILE, at the Kang Household, My Korean Host Mom Jenny is Serving My Host Dad Steve and I Fish for Dinner. Photo from http:/ trendsontrends.com/, a website about homecooked meals that actually makes me want to cook. MEANWHILE, at the Kang Household, my host mom Jenny is serving my host dad Steve and I fish for dinner. The two of them silently and spontaneously engage in a mild competition to outdo the other in being an awesome host parent to me. ME: Wow, fish! As Jenny laugh...

The View from the Cheap Seats. A collection of nonfiction by Neil Gaiman. He’s brilliant, and these pieces in particular are the kind of writing that fills me with hope so big it hurts to breath a little. In “Credo,” he ended with: “. And yet it moves.” In spite of itself and continuously, it does. And so will I. Our posturings, our ...

I’m goin’ down memory lane. Looking back and moving forward →. February 2, 2015 · 5:51 pm. The heart of the apple. Last week, I saw this sign outside the 57th Street subway stop:. Or do they all rely on each other to capture the idea and reality of the city as a polyphonic whole? To belong inevitably leads to dissent and exclusion. When we strive to create and maintain a single, coherent identity, we fail. We draw lines and retreat from one another. But hey, who said anything about doing things neatly?

The heart of the apple. And yet it moves →. August 11, 2016 · 11:50 am. Looking back and moving forward. I started this blog when I went abroad for the first time to study in France, way back in 2012. Four years ago already, at the time of this writing. I’ll leave you, reader, with a quote from someone I’ve come to admire recently, that sums up what drives me to keep writing and learning. Carl Sagan, in. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps...

Monthly Archives: January 2014. January 30, 2014 · 12:31 am. Some good news for me, bad news for the blog: I’m leaving for Australia and New Zealand next week and I’m coming back at the beginning of March, so this will be the last post for a while. In exchange, however, I promise to collect some interesting material while I’m traveling. Thinking about all of their endless handwriting in particular reminded me of “Marginalia,” another poem. We have all seized the white perimeter as our own. In that moment...

So over the next few weeks in this new American life I’ve begun, I’ll post more thoughts and memories about Korea to say goodbye (for now) to this crazy, beautiful place. So Let’s get started. It’s been quite a while since my last post, so between then and now I managed to get through two books:. To Kill a Mockingbird. By Harper Lee and. As a refresher,. Is about life in...
The Fulbrighter in South Korea: Date Night w/ My Co-Teacher | Samgwangsa Temple's Festival of Lights!
http://thefulbrighter.blogspot.com/2015/05/date-night-w-my-co-teacher-samgwangsa.html
Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Date Night w/ My Co-Teacher Samgwangsa Temple's Festival of Lights! One of the cooler [and more unexpected] aspects of my time here in South Korea has been the absolutely fantastic Fulbright co-teachers I have been blessed to work with. To date, I have worked with five - three "official" ones, and two who, for various reasons had to temporarily sub in for my "official" ones. They have all been extremely helpful, accommodating, and adventurous! The lanterns were in different colors.

Be Better -
November 27, 2017. Posted in Be Better. Thanksgiving was just a day ago, and its around this time that being thankful becomes an overwhelmingly trendy thing. I have a particularly unpopular take on it, though; I think in general what most people are thankful for is complete nonsense (see I told you unpopular). Please let me explain. I'm not some ungrateful miserable … Continue reading Thankful. Couch to Boston Journal – Day 88. November 13, 2017. November 13, 2017. Posted in Couch to Boston. This is goin...

Busan, South Korea. What I wanna do — I don't know yet. What I wanna be — different. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. With this principle in mind, I have been silent for quite some time. Not because California is terrible, but because I had chosen to focus on the negative rather than the positive. I was consumed by what I was missing instead of what I was gaining. In any case, I’m glad I didn’t say too much about it. Admittedly, Inside Out. I remember the precise moment ...
