Case study: Nonbinary people. Nonbinary people are less visible than other groups, yet experience significant discrimination. Employees should be respectful to nonbinary people in the language they use and how they treat them. Case study: LGBTQA people. Case study: Transgender people. Case study: Disabled people. Measuring progress
http://projectinclude.org/measuring_progress
Diversity and inclusion initiatives must include comprehensive metrics for success for accountability. If companies fail to measure their demographics, broken down by function, level, and short- and long-term trends, they won’t be able to assess the success, or failure, of initiatives and leaders. Collecting data with well-worded, thoughtfully structured surveys provides critical information that informs policies, procedures, and programs and drives accountability. Why did we choose this area? Measuring ...
Training
http://projectinclude.org/training
Why did we choose this area? Once a company has set up a culture and tools, and implemented them, it’s up to employees to make the right decisions for inclusion. They will often need help, and training is one more way to help set expectations, provide guidance, and emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion. How do we think about training? Training is one component of a comprehensive program. It should be inclusive and cover more than just women and race, and results should be measured. As we de...

Doing it for the Girls. It’s clear we’re in the midst of a period of evolution when it comes to women and minorities involvement in the tech industry. The first step for any shift of this magnitude is awareness, and it’s apparent that the issue is receiving the attention it deserves. I feel it’s a great time to be immersed in, entering, or gaining an interest in technology, despite the currently unattractive gender and diversity ratios. Yes, there’s safety in numbers, but there’s comfort in community.

To get started I want to ask you, what do you believe you can change about the world? I don’t know about the world, but what I hope to change about Silicon Valley is its attitude towards people of underrepresented backgrounds in tech. There are still so many injustices institutionalized in the tech industry that affect the mobility and comfort of people who are not majority, aka a white or Asian male. Going off that, can you talk about The Women of Silicon Valley project you started? Thanks to their inte...

My reward for actually finishing something. Saturday, March 16, 2013. In search of the perfect egg. Everyone has a tip for making the "perfect" hard-boiled egg. Do an internet search- it's overwhelming. Unfortunately, my eggs are often hit or miss.
