Historically, prisoners have worked to cover their expenses. This has led to various strong skills developed in prisons. The Finnish government and post office had their forms printed in a Finnish prison until late last century before the age of digital printing. Now the same machines are used for Project Papillon’s two-coloured printing. Finnish prisons traditionally have special expertise in printing and sewing as well as in metal and wood work. This is where our key chains are hand-forged.

Working while doing time. The history of inmatework. Work rehabilitates. That’s a given in prisons around the world these days, but this constructive view is very recent. Inmate labour is an ancient concept, and for a few millennia it was seen as a more severe form of sanction. Meanwhile, the benefit of free manpower made it common practice. In the late 18th century, when Finland was governed by Sweden, imprisonment that involved labour was still considered a stronger punishment than simply doing time.

Creativity increases self-esteem and self-awareness, and helps to control behaviour as well as cope with stress and traumatic experiences. Therefore art therapy has substantial healing potential for physical, mental and emotional problems, as well as different illnesses and disorders. That is the case even when the creative process is not part of a therapeutic treatment.
