Choral Confessions: April 2014
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Tuesday, April 1, 2014. There is no more wrathful an experience as the Verdi Dies Irae,. There is no more desperate a plea as his Salva me, no more copious tears flow than flow during his Lacrymosa. The orchestra is huge, the choir is huge, and emotion is spilling out all over the place! This is not a Deutsches Requiem by any stretch of the imagination, there is no contained resignation nor comfort in it whatsoever! This is pure Italian Opera! Links to this post. There ...

Choral Confessions: Christmas 2014
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2014/11/christmas-2014.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Thursday, November 13, 2014. Ivars Taurins as Handel. So this Alto is happy to be in full swing rehearsals again! The WSO will hopefully remember that they liked him and won't give him their customary cold shoulder at the first rehearsal. In the First Mennonite Church Choir we are performing Schubert's Mass in G which I have not sung before and so I am happy to have the opportunity and surprised to learn that I really like it. This is the link. I am an alto. Awesome Inc...

Choral Confessions: March 2013
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Thursday, March 28, 2013. I have had two Mozart Requiem rehearsals with the skillful Mozart expert, Jane Glover. Dr. Glover knows Mozart well, having studied much about him during the writing of her book, Mozart's Women. She feels him in every part of this work and wonderfully transfers those passions to the choir. The one truly sorrowful movement is the No. 7 Lacrymosa. That day of tears and mourning. One of my favourite expressions of Glover's, which I remember from w...

Choral Confessions: February 2013
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Tuesday, February 26, 2013. I have forgotten to post that the Elijah Concert was a huge success! The soprano, Tracy Dahl, was sparkling and sang with such drama one felt as though we were in an opera! Links to this post. Other differences in the Requiems is that Mozart includes the traditional Dies Irae while Brahms does not even give us a peek of hell. Brahms is all about comfort, and who better to provide comfort than the alto. (You know, I have to speak like ...1 Sev...

Choral Confessions: May 2013
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Beethoven's 9th with Alexander Mickelthwate and WSO. The Ode to Joy. Loud, high joyful. Fast, screaming beautiful. Uplifting whirlwind transcending our human problems. Freude schoener Goetterfunken Tochter aus Elysium. Freudig wie ein Held zum Siegen! Powerful and spiritual and so popular it is used my many a comedy sketch. Seen here if you click on Sesame Street. And of course done here by the hilarious Mr. Bean. Links to this post. I am an alto.

Choral Confessions: July 2013
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Friday, July 19, 2013. Little Singing but still Listening. Here I am at another summer break in the choral season. My soul longs to be meeting with a choir regularly to rehearse and perfect something together. Regular choir rehearsals keep me contained somehow and I am at a bit of a loss without them. For now I have to be content with looking ahead to the 2013/14 season when I am hoping to be part of the following presentations:. John of Damascus - Taneyev. I am an alto.

Choral Confessions: Laryngitis
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2014/02/laryngitis.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Saturday, February 22, 2014. To be voiceless is one of the most anxiety producing states for a singer such as I. I need to sing. For the last 10 days I have been quite nervous about the state of my voice. From 2 days of only being able to whisper to 8 of speaking an octave below my usual register I am wondering if I will be able to perform in the upcoming Mozart/Taneyev concert. Choral Confessions: Summer Fallow
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2014/07/summer-fallow.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Friday, July 25, 2014. Here I am in another summer dry season. No performances nor rehearsals. The usual depression was staved off by copious amounts of German beer. Whilst cheering on the German team during World Cup 2014. I share three loves with Pavarotti: music, food and football. (soccer to our North American minds). What is a chorister to do? Time to look ahead at the upcoming Season. 1 First off will be rehearsals for church Advent concert. Nope It is an Ivar mar...

Choral Confessions: October 2013
http://choralconfessions.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Alto writes about her choral life. Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Out of my league. So the 2013-14 Choral Season has begun. I am only involved in one Christmas concert this season which will be John Rutter's Magnificat with the church choir. Besides this I am now a member of a women's quartet! This is not like choral singing at all. For one thing there are four lines of music and only four singers which means no one else is singing my line except me! We are known as The Schmucke Madchen (The Pretty Girls) a...
