Sunday, 18 September 2016. View over Flayosc from behind the church. Nestled into the hills and bordering on the Haut Var is an exquisite little village that, despite its beauty – is easy to miss. The archway through which we entered Flayosc. Located just off the main road between Draguignan and Brignoles (where cyclists in the Tour de France sped by in 2011), it is a quiet village with a surprising amount of activity. The road just above the vieille ville. Inside there is a wealth of artistry – fr...

Wednesday, 22 June 2016. Artists of Les Arcs (2). A typical Loupot design for Sato Egyptian cigarettes. Continuing the art theme from last post, we move to a slightly younger artist - responsible for many of the wonderful Art Deco posters that abounded in the post World War One period in France. His name is Charles Loupot (1892-1962) and while he wasn't born in Les Arcs, his parents moved here in 1923 and he visited the town regularly after that. In 1923, Charles Loupot returned to Paris where he designe...

Wednesday, 24 February 2016. Up on the roof. Looking down over the rooftops of Roquebrune Cap Martin showing the coastline and sea in the background. One thing I do love about the south of France are the rooftops. An aged tile on our roof. Each of the old curved terracotta tiles is a piece of art decorated with varying colours and and lichen growth. Some are newer than others and the old ones can appear quite grey. Going up . . . But first you will have to climb just under 600 steps. 8211; plus Cap Marti...

Sunday, 30 October 2016. Mountains to Sea - the Argens River. The River Argens at Les Arcs in mid-summer. Les Arcs-sur-Argens is distinguished by its location - 'on the Argens' river - and occupies the river's wide, fertile valley - ideal for the surrounding vineyards. The river, officially 116 kilometres long, is completely contained within the Var department, which it bisects with Toulon, the Maures and the coast to the south and the high inland, perched villages and gorges to the north. However we wer...

Saturday, 31 December 2016. A time to look forward. Place Général de Gaulle in mid-winter with the pollarded plane trees. Too cold for outdoor tables! New Year’s Eve and we look forward, not just to some spectacular fireworks over Lake Wendouree in Ballarat, but to a fresh New Year where (we have to believe this! 65279; I look over to our little village, Les Arcs-sur-Argens, in France and see that the Maire des Arcs. Then mid-month (back in Les Arcs) there will be a special Concert du Nouvel An. New Year...

Sunday, 30 August 2015. Towns around Les Arcs-sur-Argens. Draguignan - capital of. And former capital of the Var. I thought in this blog, I would give a round-up of all the little towns near Les Arcs-sur-Argens. Draguignan (above) is not so small. Its population is around 45,000 and it's the former departmental capital (now Toulon). The houses are typical of. There is a daily market in the square, museums, cinema, bookshops and it's great just to browse around the back streets of the central. Le Muy is l...

Wednesday, 25 November 2015. Cooking in Les Arcs - Part 2. A meal from the cookery class. Photo: Curt Dennison. Last month I wrote about my friend, Karen. Who will be running cooking classes in Les Arcs-sur-Argens in March and April next year. Karen is a qualified chef who runs her own restaurant, The Eagle’s Nest, in Missouri, USA. Her Scandinavian grandfather, Axel Blumensaadt, trained with one of France’s leading chefs, Auguste Escoffier, in the late 1800s. The Guard House next to the clock tower.

Thursday, 10 March 2016. An open-air art exhibition in the main square at. With the 'rock' in the background. Sunday, 11 December 2016. Sainte-Agnès nestled below the peak of a mountain topped by a medieval chateau. This little village in the far south-east corner of France is very dear to my heart. 8211; the highest village In Europe which is also closest to the sea ( ‘le village du littoral le plus haut d’Europe’. 8211; is listed as one of the country’s most beautiful. It is also the ancestral village of my husband’s family on his mother’s side, with the plaque in the Chapelle de Saint-Sebastien. Or whether it...
