Read aloud to your child – find a chapter book that you can share with them. Make time to hear your child read to you. Talk about what the story is about. Make library visits a regular thing – encourage your child to choose their own books. Display pieces of writing on a wall, on the fridge or in a scrapbook – make time to read and enjoy them. Encourage them to read every night before they go to sleep. Cut back on the TV and get them into the reading habit. Encourage your child to take part in discussions with other adults who visit. Encourage them to read the newspaper, and to read out and discuss specific items. If they are musical, get them to write song lyrics.
