Friday, December 5, 2008. Joys of stroke rehab. There were a few patients that myself and the other student were assigned to treat regularly throughout the placement. Some of these patients were quite old, had had quite a delay between their stroke and receiving rehab, and often did not want to get better. Couple those factors with the language barrier and it made for a very interesting and frustrating clinical experience. Physios who poorly manage. Patients who dont improve. Firstly, there are patients ...

PT Blog This: Palliative Care

http://ptblogthis.blogspot.com/2008/11/palliative-care.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2008. I would like to share an experience from my rural placement. It is in regards to a palliative patient who was on the ward list. The patient was extremely emaciated, was nearly completely blind, and had severe respiratory disease. He had threatened nursing staff, and was clearly losing his will to live. The point I am trying to make is at what point with a palliative patient do you leave your professional hat at the door, and respect the patients wish to be left alone? Differ...

PT Blog This: September 2008

http://ptblogthis.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 29, 2008. On my recent cardio placement, I was at a cardiothoracic ward. On the ward there were 2 physiotherapists who are sharing the clinical duties due to the staff shortage. On the ward, we were mainly following one physiotherapist in the morning, and in late afternoon (after 3) we have another physiotherapist to supervise us. Has anyone else had similar experience and how could I handled it differently rather than adapting to different methods? Monday, September 15, 2008. I thought...

PT Blog This: Some gains vs Nursing Home

http://ptblogthis.blogspot.com/2008/11/some-gains-vs-nursing-home.html

Tuesday, November 25, 2008. Some gains vs Nursing Home. This next entry is also regarding my neurology placement. One of our patients was a severley affected right MCA. When we took this patient on, he had been an inpatient for at lest three months, and had achieved small gains in this time. He had severe left, unilateral neglect, very poor trunk control, and a severe left hemiparesis, along with many other impairments. By the end of the placement, the decision had been made to place the patient in a nur...

http://ptblogthis.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Dont get tunnel vision. I realize that from time to time I slip into the frame of seeing the condition rather than the person, and in some patients, maybe this does not matter as much as with others, but since having the neuro prac I am now much more aware that a condition can almost never be separated from a person. Monday, May 26, 2008. His pain is medically managed by gabapellin, however from his medical notes of last appointment, on the pain chart, he pointed to no pain. ...

PT Blog This: patients who dont improve

http://ptblogthis.blogspot.com/2008/12/patients-who-dont-improve.html

Friday, December 5, 2008. Patients who dont improve. Over the past few placements I’ve noticed that there are several patients that I see in each placement that do not seem to improve in their condition. It can be quite a frustrating and confusing thing to encounter. I think there are a few reasons for this happening. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We're a group of final year Physiotherapy students from Curtin University reflecting on our Clinical Placement Experiences. Joys of stroke rehab.
