From the White Mountains: March 2007

From the White Mountains. Tuesday, March 20, 2007. It's been long time no post. I read an article tonight about the challenges of teaching at the middle-school level. From the New York Times. It makes me feel a little less like a poser-hack and more like what I am: a first year teacher trying to prepare 8th grade Apaches for AIMS. Turn over rate for middle school teachers is higher than at any other level due to. There's no tracking, so the variety of skills and abilities in one classroom is dizzying.

From the White Mountains. Thursday, August 31, 2006. The Fry Bread Journey. Another week's flown by: kids writing their myths and typing up final drafts. I got a beautiful myth called "Brent's Fry Bread Journey." He goes to a party, and he starts talking to his friend, the talking donkey. Talking Donkey informs him that there is no flour to make fry bread, so they go on a journey to buy flour (having to battle the evil Otis along the way). Now it's Tribal Fair time and the start of a 4-day weekend! Had a...

From the White Mountains. Wednesday, June 06, 2007. Floppy, our rez dog. School's out and I'm east coast stylin' for a few weeks. A friend from our Canyon Day teacher housing informed me that at the school, a free clinic was providing spaying, neutering, and vaccinations for strays. Our neighborhood has adopted an adorable she-mutt. She's a fan of mine, because I take her on long hikes. She loves H, S, C, and now B because of the nourishment they provide. Meanwhile, Flops heals and is healthy. A Basketba...

From the White Mountains. Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Today is the last day of school. The last day of my first year of teaching. And for the past two hours, I thought that a beloved student of mine was killed in a car accident. But after crying about her for a while, I found out that it wasn't her, it was her older sister. I have so many students who have lost sisters, brothers, and cousins in car accidents. I'm suddenly very happy to be getting out of here for the summer. Posted by Jessica at 1:24 PM. I'll ...

From the White Mountains. Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Today, we took a break from the curriculum. Instead, I dressed up as Hermione Granger. And I told the students that if they called me a Mudblood. While they quietly doodled and colored (a tactic that hopefully helps them relax into the story). I love having my kids write journals. I see them playing around with form and content; being creative; and writing! Posted by Jessica at 3:22 PM. Monday, October 30, 2006. Coraline by Neil Gaiman. As my mom said,...

From the White Mountains. Saturday, April 28, 2007. Last weekend, adventure. Saturday: Neverland, really. Drove to Phoenix. Shopped at Buffalo Exchange (dope on dope! Sunday: Lunch, a few brews, a hotel, and a hot tub in Mesa. In the hot tub, the sounds around me formed beats and melodies. The beat of the bubbles against my skin. The repeated calling of the birds. The beat of the sun. The rhythm of the breeze in the trees. This weekend, Flagstaff, maybe? Posted by Jessica at 9:20 AM. My friends and I wen...

From the White Mountains. Tuesday, November 28, 2006. People in the Trees. Just wanted to post this year and a half old picture. Which is the photo of the week in The Nation, for the amusement of anyone out there who lives or did live in Ithaca. The Redbud Woods has been chopped and is now, sadly, a parking lot for Cornell students. Posted by Jessica at 12:50 PM. Wednesday, November 22, 2006. It'll be interesting to see what attendance is like today, this half day before Thanksgiving. 41-59 words = C.
