However, within this thriving metropolitan area, many significant health problems and disparities exist. St. Louis leads the nation in the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. It tops the list for infant mortality and its prevalence is aligned or greater than some developing countries. Heart disease in African Americans is twice that of Americans overall. Why do these disparities exist? Whose responsibility is it to reduce and eliminate these disparities?

Dedicated to the memory of Terry Leet, Ph.D. Terry Leet, Ph.D. Terry L. Leet, born on March 12, 1952, passed way Wednesday April 29, 2009 after battling cancer for more than a year. He was 57. He was an epidemiologist with a specialty in Maternal and Child health. He was the Principal Investigator on the Gateway Study Center of the National Children’s Study, the largest longitudinal study of children, following them from before birth to 21 years of age.
