Kieren’s techie blog. Fightin’ with Web systems like a true modern day Robin Hood. Upcoming changes to cookie laws. As I’m sure most readers are aware, the European e-Privacy directive is due to be implemented in the UK in May and will result in a change in the law relating to cookies (small files stored on your computer’s hard drive). This change is getting increasing coverage on techie mailing lists and even on more mainstream news sites such as the BBC. Http:/ www.ico.gov.uk/for organisati...Http:/ ww...

Mobile Workshop | General Gubbins
https://johngreenaway.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/mobile-workshop
Recently I was lucky enough to go the mobile workshop at Bristol University, held as part of the JISC funded mobile work. It was being run by Mike Jones. An ex-Cardiff guy, so guaranteed quality). Firstly – Bristol needs less of a hill. Seriously. Sure I saw Edmund Hilary near the Wills Memorial. Secondly – are all uni IT departments housed in the oldest buildings available? To help there. Though that was done after the app was complete, rather than at the start of the development process. Banking (inter...

May 6, 2008 Posted by stuartchurch Filed under Tools. This blog has been forlornly gathering cobwebs for a fair few months now. However, I’ve finally given it a bit of an overhaul by fixing some broken bits and turning it green, with the aim of starting to blog much more regularly. One new feature of the site is the addition of a Flickr feed in the right-hand column (uploaded to Flickr using the stunningly useful Jing. Right then … better get writing, hadn’t I? NHS IT systems fail due to lack of User-Centred Design? July 11, 2007 Posted by stuartchurch Filed under Usability. Very interesting report at Contractor UK. About Richard Granger, the former Director of IT at the NHS. He is, apparently, “ashamed” of some of the NHS IT systems and quite damning of some their contractors. Of particular note is the comment that one system:. Isn’t useable (sic) because they have been building a system with Fujitsu without listening to what the end users want. Stephen Anders...

Furthermore, they’re doing it in a very transparent way, with the ongoing process being documented at The WAI Web Site Redesign Project. At the moment, the site contains a detailed breakdown of user groups. And a task analysis. Of the existing WAI site. Cheers for the link, Darius. The kind folks at Tradingeye email...

Punctuated equilibrium in product development? May 16, 2006 Posted by stuartchurch Filed under Design. I’m intrigued to see that there’s a new holding page on IAWiki. Punctuated Equilibiurm is the theory proposed by Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould. That evolutionary change happens in small bursts of rapid change, interspersed by periods of relatively little change (or stasis). It’s not just about product development either. Bigger cultural technological changes such as Web2.0. I don’t think I ...
