Boston Marathon 2014 – the Purity of Speed
https://purityofspeed.wordpress.com/2014/04/22/boston-marathon-2014
The Purity of Speed. The Purity of Speed. April 22, 2014. April 23, 2014. Right on Hereford, left on Boylston…. From the corner, I could see the finish line and the long long stretch of pavement still to cover. Less than a mile. Just a few more minutes. But it was taking forever. The crowds were the thickest here. And the loudest. Their cheers echoed off the surrounding buildings. Yet I felt I was finishing all alone. 8221; as I passed by and I started to choke up. I had a long ways to go. I focused on m...

https://purityofspeed.wordpress.com/2015/04/18/boston-2015
The Purity of Speed. The Purity of Speed. April 18, 2015. April 18, 2015. After last year’s Marathon, I was pretty sure I didn’t need to run it again. But then registration opened last fall and I had run a qualifying time in the 2014 race. So I signed up. Just in case I changed my mind. After a summer of bike racing, I switched to dryland ski training, and running was a big part of it. I was running well, without injury. I ran PRs in the BAA Half-Marathon. It’s been full-on since then. No holdi...I’...
2014 Winter Classic 5k – the Purity of Speed

The Purity of Speed. The Purity of Speed. December 18, 2014. December 18, 2014. 2014 Winter Classic 5k. I ran the Winter Classic 5k last week with my yoga running group. It was supposed to be a fun race. With beer afterward. This time of year, I’m better suited to being on the snow in 30 degree weather. But snow has been scarce so far. But a race is a race. I stuck to my recent strategy of starting out easy and working my way into the race. And that’s what I did. I just ran. Ran fast. Blog at WordPress&#...
Gapped – the Purity of Speed
https://purityofspeed.wordpress.com/2015/07/18/gapped
The Purity of Speed. The Purity of Speed. July 18, 2015. July 18, 2015. As mid-July approached and the days grew heavy with heat, I found myself reminiscing of the long Vermont climbs I raced when I was much younger. I had recently dropped my son off at camp in Plymouth and as I drove along Rt. 100 and the vaguely familiar roads near Killington, I somehow conceived the notion to ride again some of those old climbs: Rochester Gap, Middlebury Gap and Brandon Gap. One down. Two to go. I welcomed the shade a...

The Purity of Speed. The Purity of Speed. BAA Half Marathon 2014. October 12, 2014. October 12, 2014. Until the final hill at 2 miles to go. Then I went for it. But I didn’t back off one bit. I kicked coming into the stadium, kicked all the way to the line. And then, finally, let up. I was done. And I felt good. I had left most of it one the road. Sure, I. Have gone a little harder. Probably. But the legs and joints and fuel and brain all worked well. One thought on “ BAA Half Marathon 2014.

Hill Junkie: January 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Weston Worlds, 2015 Opener. Wednesday, January 14, 2015. The Tuesday night crit-on-snow race series. Has begun at Weston on the Leo J. Martin golf course. A large group showed up Tuesday, despite frigid temp, with over 80 racers between the A and B fields. With conditions marginally sketchy after a full day of activities on the course, I pondered for a moment if I shouldn't race in the slower B group. Hard packed conditions brings out the worst in my weak technique. After a large gap opened, a few more s...
Hill Junkie: November 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 14, 2014. Then a couple weeks later, I noticed a very subtle bump in the drivetrain when hammering in a smaller cogs. Running the chain through my hand on the bike stand, I didn't see or feel anything odd. Yet the subtle bump persisted. It didn't skip or anything, like it was earlier with the tight link. You just could feel something wasn't quite right in the chain. Then one morning before work, I was throwing some lube on and something caught my eye. A link was missing a roller! With T-...
Hill Junkie: September 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2014. Did over two weeks fly by without a post? My 10 days in Colorado is already a distant memory. Races were always good for blog fodder. Without trips and races, what is there to talk about here? Stellar weather was on tap for Sunday. Lining up for 6:05am start, it wasn't even cold out. Most years there is frost on the ground or it is raining. Staying hydrated was a bigger concern, as temps were expected to rise above 80F later in the day. I was on the hairy cusp of total crampin...
Hill Junkie: May 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 26, 2014. I really needed a solid ride this weekend that didn't involve hypothermia. I was too tired Sunday to do much of a ride after Saturday's debacle in rain, hail and mud. So that left today. Wouldn't you know it, it was raining again when I got up. That wasn't supposed to happen. Fire the weather men and women. We need forecasters that forecast good weather and make it stick! That gave me the creeps, just like the little girl from the movie Poltergeist when she says "They're Here! We ma...
Hill Junkie: March 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 29, 2015. I've discussed "double-dipping" here before, some time ago. It's always been in the context of refusing to let go of the cycling season as the transition to snow sports begins. Well, this year I suffer from the malady on the other side of the pendulum swing. It is hard to let go of the Nordic ski season. Yep, that will put you in a hole. Or how about 4000ft of solo threshold work on the bike on Friday, then hit sticky snow on skate skis with two others on Saturday. That wo...I'll ...
Hill Junkie: August 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 29, 2015. In its third year, I finally had no schedule conflict to participate in the Kearsarge Hillclimb Race. I've climbed Mt Kearsarge many times by bike over the years, so I was intimately familiar with its undulating profile. That profile would make for some interesting race dynamics. Lining up, I didn't see my nemesis Erik Vandendries. Maybe I had a shot at a 50 win. A friend noted that the men's 50 age group was over 25% of the pre-registered riders! Could have gone either way....
Hill Junkie: J.A.M. Fund Grand FUNdo
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015/07/jam-fund-grand-fundo.html
Jam Fund Grand FUNdo. Monday, July 27, 2015. Saturday was a perfect day to join 300 other like-minded riders for some dirt road fun. I participated in this fund raising ride. Once before in 2011. This year's course featured new sections. When my friend Brett expressed interest, I couldn't think of a better way to get my weekend fix in. I'll let the photos portray how the day went. Starting out with police escort. Lead group at first food stop. No rush to get back on bikes. Timmy playing on the rocks.
Hill Junkie: October 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Rapha Course - where blue meets brown. Saturday, October 25, 2014. After this week's deluge, I didn't think local trail conditions would be to my liking. And after a confrontation with a motorist during Friday's lunch spin, local roads didn't seem very attractive either. I had yet to ride my Trek Cronus since I put wide 38mm tubeless tires on it over a month ago. Some quiet Vermont gravels roads seemed attractive. I've heard it said before you know when you are approaching the summit of a climb when you ...
Hill Junkie: February 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 13, 2015. With record snow tallies, the "Tuesday Night World's" at Weston is thriving. I missed a week when I suspected dubious conditions. But the last couple weeks were fabulous. A challenging, nearly 3km course is now laid out over the original snow-making area and a long finger out into the "flats.". It was perfect powder conditions, zero wind, upper 20's for temp. In other words, it doesn't get better than that. Didn't I warm up thoroughly enough? With less than two minutes to go, i...

the Purity of Speed | snapshots of a part-time athlete
The Purity of Speed. Snapshots of a part-time athlete. July 30, 2015. July 30, 2015. I put in a couple of intense training weeks in an attempt to jumpstart my cycling fitness. Some stacked workouts. Anaerobic threshold intervals and such. Maybe not enough recovery. I was starting to feel fit but I was also feeling tired. Apparently, in your 40’s, you need more recovery time. So when I got on the bike this morning, this is what my heart rate monitor told me. So I took the advice and took it really easy.

Purity of the Line
Purity of the Line. A humble sharing of my thoughts and images as I stumble through this journey of being an artist and illustrator. Saturday, May 28, 2011. Figuring out This Digital Thing. Here is a sketch, started in my sketchbook during a lazy Friday night, and built it up a bit in Photoshop. I like this process a lot better than simply starting from scratch in PS, it helps keep things in perspective, so I don't just quit out of a digital drawing 2 hours in. Wednesday, May 25, 2011. It's a pretty heav...
