Visual Astronomy for Blind Individuals

Project Bright Sky's Story - A chance encounter while attempting to image The Ring Nebula led Frank Busutil to pose a question. What concept do blind people have of the universe and can they enjoy it if they cannot see it? Upon contacting the Los Angeles Braille Institute's instructor, Don Weitzman, an opportunity presented itself. He explained:. And can still detect a small amount of light. What they need to see the universe are the proper optics, something which they seldom see.

PVAA General Meeting Details

At 7:30pm on the Friday evening closest to the full Moon our members meet in Shanahan B460. At Harvey Mudd College. At our meetings we discuss celestial events and latest developments in astronomy. Guest speakers regularly attend and share their experiences with us. Our meeting location is near Foothill Blvd., between Mills and Dartmouth Avenue.

We schedule a monthly star party on the Saturday closest to the new moon. For our star parties, we normally travel to an area where the skies are dark enough to facilitate viewing dim "Deep Sky" objects. At star parties, the new or inexperienced amateur astronomer has a chance to learn from more experienced members. You will also have an opportunity to look through a variety of telescopes, from small (but crystal clear! Once again, welcome!
