If you are aged 24 or over and and do not have a full A1 or full A2 licence you will have to have a valid Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT). Certificate and obtain a current motorcycle theory certificate, you can take the two part practical test on a bike of at least 595 cc and at least 40kw.

CBTs were introduced in 1990 and have been successful in reducing accident rates. A CBT course must be completed to gain a DL196 certificate to validate your licence to allow you to ride a moped or motorcycle with L plates. Most people need to complete a CBT course, however, if you passed your car test before 1st February 2001 you can ride a moped without taking a CBT.
