2011 Junior Streamkeeper Course. On March 23, a group of 16 young streamkeepers between the ages of 8 and 12 joined fish biologist Dave Clough to learn about healthy streams, riparian zones and fish habitat. The participants spent the morning in and around Beach Creek in the Qualicum Beach Heritage Forest, finding aquatic insects and carrying out water quality tests. Calendar of Events 2016. Over thirty work parties are organized each year. Activities include bank stabilization work in Grandon and Beach Creeks, tree planting in riparian zones, removal of invasive plants such as lamium and giant hogweed, and the annual salmon carcass toss. On February 17, 2016 Gord Almond received the Volunteer of the Year award as part of the 2016 Qualicum Beach Community Awards presented by the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce. Gord is the Vice-President of the Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers Society and is leading the RDN Community Watershed Monitoring program in our area which includes 10 sampling days at various sites in the Little Qualicum River, Beach Creek, and Grandon Creek. Each year, Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers supports a booth at Qualicum Beach Family Day to promote awareness of the importance of streams and fish habitat. In 2012, activities at the booth included facepainting for young children and a Wheel of Life for children to spin and find out about the challenges faced by salmon throughout their life cycle from the embryo stage until their return several years later to the river or stream which gave them birth. This photo was taken at Grandon Creek near a multi-year habitat improvement project to enhance spawning and rearing habitat for coho salmon and cutthroat trout that was started in the summer of 2013.
