73, de N2HTT. A blog about ham radio, Linux and more…. June 24, 2016. This past January, I became aware of a new event celebrating the vintage rigs popular in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, the Novice Rig Roundup. I love the tube rigs from that era, and absolutely had to put together a … Continue reading →. Rockbound no more… almost. March 24, 2016. Straight Key Century Club. If it ain’t fixed, don’t break it. 73, de N2HTT. A blog about ham radio, Linux and more…. More software, less radio. The QRP Blowtorch Rides Again →. May 9, 2015. Back in March, around the time I had received my SI5351 breakout board kit from EtherKit. And a more traditional 20 character by 4 line backlit LCD. All this stuff arrived before I had gotten around to building the SI5351 board, so I had a chance to play with it in advance. 20×4 LCD display as they are found in nature. And there was a display library and sample sketches. Readily...

April 3, 2015. An Early Morning Spin On 49M With The Sproutie. Filed under: Amateur Radio. 8212; AA7EE @ 5:04 pm. And thinking that I might as well make use of the fact that I was up at 5:30am, while night-time and grey-line propagation on 49M would be in full swing. Coffee at the ready, I decided to perform a band scan on 49M with The Sproutie. The idea was to log every station I could hear on the band. The excellent site short-wave.info. Needless to say, I heard a lot of Chinese. Regen doesn’t cu...

National PW-D Micrometer Dial. Western Historic Radio Museum. A couple of weeks ago, I posted about some reduction drives I had acquired,. There is a great deal of information on servicing these gear boxes, and the National micrometer dial, on this page. Here’s the gear housing, elliptic bearing hub, and worm gear with th...

qrp-gaijin: Building a 7 MHz small transmitting loop antenna, part 2
http://qrp-gaijin.blogspot.com/2015/01/building-7-mhz-small-transmitting-loop.html
Building a 7 MHz small transmitting loop antenna, part 2. I did some more exploratory work on the mechanics of constructing my 7 MHz small transmitting loop. Fitting copper pipes together. The copper pipes I am using are 6mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 0.5 mm. This means that the inner diameter should be 5mm. Therefore, I needed to swage open the ends of the 6mm copper pipe, creating a flared opening at the pipe end, so that the 5mm pipe could fit inside. Then, the pipes will be soldered together.

Building a 7 MHz small transmitting loop antenna, part 3. Part 3 of this article series focuses on the mechanics of the motorised variable capacitor. Mounting the capacitor and motor. And, this link describes in detail various loss mechanisms of air variable capacitors, including dielectric losses: http:/ g3rbj.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Measurements of Loss in Variable Capacitors issue 2.pdf. The capacitor is mounted on the polyethylene board as follows. The motor looks as follows. The current mot...

Welcome to Freestate QRP. Monday, August 24, 2015. The Hombre's Return - Handy Homebrew RF Resources, Permission to Fail and Errata. Many of my projects fail to work or meet my goals in some way. Sometimes it is an issue of poor planning, incorrect assumptions, wrong measurements or even over ambition. Many of the times it is the inability to create the circuit/system in the form factor that I envisioned. Called ' The Homebrewer's Lament. CM 3D multi-turn loop. CM qrp.gaijin@yahoo.com (2014/04). The simulation results are as shown in the following image. It follows that by adjusting the turn spacing or diameter, the structure can be made self-resonant with no need for an additional resonating capacitor. qrp-gaijin: Fringe howling regenerative receiver
http://qrp-gaijin.blogspot.com/2014/10/fringe-howling-regenerative-receiver.html
Fringe howling regenerative receiver. Schematic diagram of fringe-howling regenerative receiver. The following video illustrates the fringe howl occurring in the receiver prototype. Although the audio and video quality are low, and the prototype circuit layout is not visually pleasing, I felt it important to create an audio-visual recording of the fringe howl phenomenon, because there is (as far as I know) no existing audio-visual documentation of the phenomenon, only written descriptions. Video from 02:...
