I began my career as a software consultant back in the mid 1970s. There was no formal Quality Assurance process. We designed, coded, and tested programs, switching gears from one job function to the next as we moved through the development process. Fast forward a few decades and we have the Quality Assurance profession, with the very specific focus of finding and preventing defects. Over the years, I morphed from jack-of-all-trades to systems analyst to developer and finally to QA analyst/lead/manager.

Do you track numbers? We have to get those defect counts down! We have to reduce those cycle times! We have to increase lines of defect-free code written for each release! We forget that numbers are just a gauge and they don't tell the whole story. The obsession with increasing/decreasing counts becomes your core purpose and product quality suffers as a result. Instead of focusing on numbers, we should focus on our core purpose: creating the highest quality product possible. Numbers are just a gauge.
