Jen In Korea: July 2011
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, July 20, 2011. In the West, you often hear people say things like “Well, I’m a Gemini so, it’s like I’m two people! 8221; (Which I guess means that they suffer from multiple personalities.) In Korea, zodiac signs aren’t really used. Instead, blood types are used. The idea is pretty similar to the zodiac. Blood types are supposed to govern your personality. Also, certain blood types combinations do better in a relationship than other combinations. Referred to as ‘hunters’, Type B...Goal orie...

Jen In Korea: Seoul, 90210 – The Musical
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2012/09/seoul-90210-musical.html
Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Seoul, 90210 – The Musical. I’m a little late on this but, there is a song that is sweeping Korea. It’s called “Gagnam Style” by Psy. The song is so popular, it’s gotten coverage on CNN and a few US musicians have tweeted about it and mentioned it during concerts, etc. The artist, Psy, will appear at the VMAs. This song is everywhere! 8221; at me (and other teachers), which is slightly disturbing. They also like to do the funny dance Psy does in the video. I’m a guy. Eh- Sex...

Jen In Korea: September 2011
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 8, 2011. Jen in.The US! I’ve been back in the US for less than a week. It’s actually a little weird. For one thing, many Americans are scary! But, a good 30% of Americans are very angry looking and rather unkempt looking (the two looks tend to go together). I get nervous around them because the obvious anger makes them appear unstable and unpredictable. Every room of my apartment is the same cool and de-humidified temperature. It’s wonderful. Cover your kids up! Jen in.The US! I've li...

Jen In Korea: May 2011
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Often, when I speak to people outside of Korea, they are very confused about my job. It’s understandable because my job doesn’t really exist outside of Korea, Japan, Taiwan and parts of China. Most people think that I am a foreign language teacher at a regular elementary/middle/high school. I’m not. I teach English as a foreign language at a hagwon or academy. A hagwon ( Korean. My school employs a combination of foreign, native English speakers and bilingual Koreans. It’...Up unti...

Thursday, September 13, 2012. America: Home of the…Zombies? It seems like America really has to clamp down on the media. Our image abroad is getting stranger and stranger with all of the weird news stories that come out of the US. Recently, I had this conversation with a kindergartener:. Kid: Ms. Jennifer, I’m glad you came to Korea. Me: Oh, why is that? Kid: Because I don’t want you to get eaten by zombies. The guy solely responsible for the zombie rumors. Wednesday, September 5, 2012. I hear it all the...

Jen In Korea: Second Grade Smackdown
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2012/08/second-grade-smackdown.html
Thursday, August 23, 2012. Today, I walked into my second grade phonics class and found a kid, Alex, sobbing uncontrollably. Why was Alex sobbing? He had just been hit in the face with a pair of nunchucks. Yes, you read that right: Alex got nunchucked – in the face – at his English academy. It turns that the other boys in the room had been playing with the nunchucks before class and Alex got hit by one kid who was wildly flailing his arm with the nunchucks in his hand. It’s not exactly a surpri...But Lui...

Jen In Korea: February 2011
http://jsinkorea.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 20, 2011. A few weeks ago, it was Lunar New Year in Korea (and other countries). To me, it didn’t really mean much but, to Koreans, it is a huge holiday. It lasts for a couple of days. The main day was Thursday, February 3 (I think). The kids were super cute about teaching me about the holiday. They were really confused by my lack of celebrating. This led to one really funny conversation. Tony: Teacher, will you be flying back to America? 8221; gift set. This is a Spam gift set. It h...
