http://www.quarterlynote.blogspot.com/2010/04/last-early-morning.html

Monday, April 19, 2010. Yes, I'm up at 7 am - it's our last lecture for Musicology 240 today, and I couldn't be more excited to go! Oh, right, I should be positive on this last day.  Nine month summer, here I come! April 19, 2010 at 8:08 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Last day of classes! Ethereal template. http://www.quarterlynote.blogspot.com/2010/04/last-day-of-classes.html

Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Last day of classes! Ahh Michigan.  School is over before May 1st, and I will have four months of beautiful weather to enjoy before school starts up again in the fall.  Wait, what was that? 160;School starting up again? 160;I get to have 8 months of vacation, that's right. Students: "Just so you know, we didn't write introductions because the paper prompt didn't say to.  So keep that in mind next time you're grading.". April 20, 2010 at 7:10 AM. Quarterly Note: Done at last!

Monday, April 26, 2010. But limiting its usage will certainly be beneficial to my career, my eyes, and my brain. I'm hoping to audition for a choir for next year.  I feel slightly guilty, since I completely punked out of the Life Sciences Orchestra about a month ago, but to be fair, that wasn't very fun for me this semester because of my terrible stand partner and because the repertory was just not very good.  I miss singing in a choir, and the UMS Choral Union performs . ThoughtLights: July 2008

http://thoughtlights.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 28, 2008. The world seems to be abuzz with questions of who should assign quality and how. First, we had the stream of critiquing the critics. Sandow's latest post. Next we have this excellent summary and cautionary tale. Finally, I'll offer up this interesting article. Victorian England without Hardy and Dickens? Posted by Dan B. at 2:17 AM. Friday, July 25, 2008. Musicology for Art's Sake. No The Dadaists were inspired by it, perhaps, and began their own movement. And without any guide,.

ThoughtLights: October 2008

http://thoughtlights.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2008. Sorry for the lack of posts. I've been writing and then rewriting the dissertation proposal, on a strict self-imposed deadline. But it's good, and better for the reduction, in part because I'm curbing my own tendencies to reference things I feel I a) should in order to be a successful musicologist and b) want to because I put the effort into reading them and I like what they have to say. It's nice when hobbies don't just give you release but help put your work in perspective (an...

ThoughtLights: February 2008

http://thoughtlights.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 23, 2008. Oscars are coming, and I realize I have yet to relay to you my top ten for the year. My initial reaction is that it was an odd year of particularly good summer movies, high on entertainment, and a strangely bleak and less-inspired fall. Anyway, here they are:. 9 Four Months, Three Weeks, Two Days. 8 The Bourne Ultimatum. One of the better action films of recent memory, Paul Greengrass's installment of part three features some of the most satisfyingly involving chase sequences...

ThoughtLights: August 2008

http://thoughtlights.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 4, 2008. I was intrigued by this article. In the NY Times. It seems one man has come upon the idea that value might be suggested by the repeated use of the images in textbooks. In the Listen textbook we use with the nonmajors, they select Haydn's Symphony 95. It's not, in my opinion, his most clever or engaging, nor his most beautiful, nor his most performed. But it does the job, possibly better than the alternatives. And there we may come to see the value in this work. But one of the real...

Which echoes previous posts elsewhere about why we blog, right? The answer may be here. I have some such performances, but that will come another day. Posted by Dan B. at 12:52 AM. Thursday, January 31, 2008. Catchup Post II: At the Met. No, not that Met. The other one. The art one. In the Verlyn Klinkenborg (which is a fantastic name for arts criticism, although he appears to be a non-fiction author) Appreciations column, he writes:. Furthermore, is there a way we can make that tradition feel relevant and present for the visitor-off-the-street? I've read a few things. Thomas Hoving's Art for Dummies. Posted by Dan B. at 4:35 PM. Sunday, April 27, 2008. Pictures, Take II. Thinking about this stuff reminded me this morning of an New York Times article from Larry Kramer from about a year ago about museums. Posted by Dan B. at 7:55 AM. Friday, April 25, 2008. Is far more general and deserving of a serious inquiry. He writes:. We have to communicate the edginess of Monet. http://thoughtlights.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 23, 2008. Campaign trailing, campaign teaching. Two things about me: I try to keep up with politics, and I'm fairly stoic in my disposition. It surprises people, I think, when I have strong opinions because I'm not the overly vocal type. In fact, Im usually torn between promoting my stance and feeling like I shouldn't foist opinions on other people. Posted by Dan B. at 12:10 PM. Monday, March 17, 2008. Weekend concert wrap up. Image for the way Britten ends the opera with an unsettling dawn).
