Queensferry, like most harbours on the Forth, is tidal. An allowance of between 21/2 to 3 hours before and after HW can generally be made, depending on draft and tidal conditions. Queensferry Boat Club was founded in 1957 to promote the interests of sailing, motorboating, or just pottering about in boats, in and around Queensferry. At that time the harbour was the focal point for boat owners. Port Edgar was still a Naval base, ferries ran to North Queensferry from the Hawes Pier and the nearest club on the south shore was at Cramond. That some sort of haven at Queensferry existed from medieval times can be inferred from early records. It is also likely that the rocks at this point, and later a pier, served as one of the ferry landing places on the south shore, along with the piers at Port Edgar, Newhalls (Hawes), Port Neuk and Long Craig.
