An inveterate asker of awkward questions. Laquo; representation: a rant. June 8, 2013. So I was watching a Let’s Play. Esque video of a dude and a lady playing a computer game together. Well, no: the dude was playing a game with a goal in mind and the woman was hanging around aimlessly, occasionally having things explained to her, but only when it didn’t interrupt what he was doing. I want to talk about how much of my time in (male) geek culture has been me being the Less Geeky One. Back to the top.

An inveterate asker of awkward questions. Laquo; China Miéville: The Scar. Great Inventions of Our Times: Capitalism. October 19, 2012. Let’s analyse this shit, though. That leaves you a lot more control, and there’s more than enough evidence that’s what the people in charge are after. Or leave a trackback: Trackback URL. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. An inveterate asker of awkward questions. Laquo; Poststructuralism for Activists. Great Inventions of Our Times: Capitalism. China Miéville: The Scar. September 3, 2012. I’ve always been torn on China Miéville. He writes beautiful prose about strange otherworlds, and that is. Totally my kind of thing. The Player of Games. Though: it really works. An inveterate asker of awkward questions. Laquo; Great Inventions of Our Times: Capitalism. December 24, 2012. This isn’t a post about stories so much as it is about assumptions. Say it’s about default cultural narratives, if you like. Either way, it’s a time where there’s lots of complicated logistics going on for much of the population of Britain. I got back from work at about half three on Christmas eve and just did nice stuff I wanted to do all afternoon, no elaborate food prep or Official Hostly Dut...

An inveterate asker of awkward questions. Laquo; Previous Post. January 28, 2013. So, I’ve been talking about Reclaim the Night. With strangers on the internet. Not a great idea, really, I’ve gotta say. The problem is that men aren’t invited to march with the women’s group. One calls the event ‘pathetic’, another says we all need to be less emotional. Why are we alienating these poor men like this? We’re missing a wonderful opportunity to ‘foster understanding’ about equality. How many men check in with ...

THE SPADE IN THE DARK LOAM THIS DARK JOY OF THE PLACE OF FINDING. I’m a queer, androgynous, Visual Cultures student. When I’m not spending time frequenting art galleries, the cinema, dead people’s houses and other things that classify as either ‘Visual’ or ‘Culture’ I can be found on trains, reading about cetaceans, and surreptitiously squeezing the gay agenda into the culture section of The Leopard Newspaper. I also write advice for parents of LGBTQ Youth for The Parents Project. Enter your comment here.

THE SPADE IN THE DARK LOAM THIS DARK JOY OF THE PLACE OF FINDING. Some observations from Keston Common. Stopping briefly to buy an ice cream that tasted like feet, we walked towards the prettiest pond, not least because of the presence of several mandarin ducks, of which Mr. Transport said, ‘they are so neatly coloured in.’ To me, they looked like fireworks someone had pressed pause on, neat fronds of orange splaying into a deep, metalic, wine purple chest, and pixelated beige wings. THE SPADE IN THE DARK LOAM THIS DARK JOY OF THE PLACE OF FINDING. A Portrait of Crystal Palace. Short after compiling my map, The Watery Part(s) of London. I ventured out to Crystal Palace Park to start filming. Lives in Crystal Palace, so I am familiar with its small cafes, superlative bookshops, and excellent furniture shops, but I am, from shame, not at all familiar with the park, despite having lived in its semi-immedeate environs on and off for about 10 years. Please bear in mind that these images a...

You can't make a career out of transitioning" - my mother. Sunday, 16 June 2013. So then, one last question: What do you want us to do for you? The answer in my head was "I want you to help me work that out". But it would have been the wrong. I was there for a diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria, and if you have Gender Dysphoria, then by definition, you must want gender confirmation therapy. You must want to do everything within your power to make your body conform to the right. There was one question he hadn't.

You can't make a career out of transitioning" - my mother. Saturday, 21 July 2012. Male Privilege for Speakers of Other Languages. It's difficult, questioning one's gender. So many different things are thrown haphazardly together under the label "gender" that it's hard to disentangle the parts that are really you. Is it in the way you behave? So you conduct experiments. I've gradually been teaching myself male privilege. Since I began experimentally identifying as transmasculine. It wasn't until I starte...

You can't make a career out of transitioning" - my mother. Monday, 10 December 2012. And then, there are the stories we tell each other, about ourselves. The world I saw in stories was so much narrower than the world I've grown up to live in. Stories are what give us the power to imagine what paths our lives might take. Even within a fandom like Red Dwarf (a show where - much as I love it -. The girls aren't funny, the men only think about sex, and the writers once had a thankfully-never-used plot idea f...

You can't make a career out of transitioning" - my mother. Thursday, 22 March 2012. Where does the money go? But there was one piece of information I couldn’t find, no matter how hard I tried: Where, exactly, were they going to invest my money? They going to invest my money? The bank will invest your pension money in whatever stocks and shares are likely to get you the best returns. They can't tell you what companies your money will be invested into, because even they. All of these were among the top hol...

You can't make a career out of transitioning" - my mother. Sunday, 12 August 2012. When I was at school, we had a debating society. Whenever the motion was "x should not be compulsory", I would be in favour. And whenever I spoke in one of these debates, I would lose. Combined Cadet Force should not be compulsory? Nah, why not? You get to fly planes and shit. It's cool. Therefore everyone should be forced to do it. Sports lessons should not be compulsory? Nah, why not? It; some people don't. They might co...
