Questioning Columbus

March 26, 2009. And why does he have a day named after him? One week before Columbus Day I was asked this by my second graders. I responded with a question – “Why do we have holidays? 8220;Because something important happened a long time ago on that day.”. 8220;Since Columbus is a person that must mean he is important or he did something important.”. 8220;What did he do? What is it that you remember about Christopher Columbus? Through readings from Lies My Teacher Told Me. A system was setup where those ...

Improvements and Revisions | Questioning Columbus

https://questioningcolumbus.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/improvements-and-revisions

Over the past 2 years I have reworked and revised the way I taught this unit. I first tried focusing more on the concept of fact and opinion. While most of the content was the same I really made sure that my students understood the difference between facts and opinions but still asked them to do the same activities. I generally got the same kind of work out of them. They were even more outraged and wondered what was happening with the Tainos now and how we could help. This allowed us to actually take...

Taking Action | Questioning Columbus

My students were not satisfied yet. Though they learned all they could they still needed some sort of closure with the subject. “How come my brother in 5th grade didn’t learn this? 8221; “I was talking to my mom about this and she never knew that Columbus did this stuff.”. I could tell from their questions that what they really wanted was to get the word out to other people. I turned this question back to them. “What can we do? In the end this is what we created. Taino Person and His House.

Laquo; Improvements and Revisions. Overall, we received positive reactions from students and staff at the school. My students were receiving compliments from their peers as well. They would come back from lunch giddy with the knowledge that other students were reading their work and enjoying their bulletin board. Laquo; Taking Action. What did he do? Why do we have a holiday? Why don’t we have school? 8221; I let the question go and watched as the students started to ponder this. 8221; remarked one students. Tainos who ran away were hunted and attacked by dogs. Though gruesome, this article captivated and awed students. “How could this happen? 8221; they asked. Questioning certainty, with a lot of doubt. The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty." -Anne Lamott. The following blog contains the musings of "post Hoke ergo propter Hoke," a queer feminist Divinity School student studying New Testament and gender criticism. The Questioning Christian

By D C. Toedt. TWO RULES for a successful life (adapted from Mark 12.28-34):. 1 If you can't love God, then at least face the facts - don't try to live in a world of wishful thinking; and. 2 If you can't love your neighbor, then at least seek the best for them as for yourself - if nothing else, it makes good evolutionary sense. November 12, 2016. Suggested reading: Bibles and other religion books. A reader sent me an email this week, excerpted below:. Extra paragraphing added.). The New International Ver...

The Armor of God. January 4, 2017. January 4, 2017. My first remembrances of learning about the armor of God goes back to my single-digit youth, spending summer at camp. I think as a child, it’s hard to fully grasp what in the world you are learning about, even with the illustration of Pilgrim’s Progress. The struggle of the soul is hard to verbalize and understand, even as it is roars on in childhood. Who goes into battle with NO WEAPON?
