The Other Side of the Ocean: 08/06/15

The Other Side of the Ocean. Thursday, August 06, 2015. Another day that has many agendas and seemingly too few hours for them. Let's start with a leisurely breakfast. Then various sundry appointments, quickly attended to and voila. I gain two hours in midday. Ed is home today and so he is there to loads wood chips into the cart and I throw them on the enlarged lily bed. It's like old times: we work in tandem in the heat of the day, we make progress. Why do I love the lilies so? Time for me to go home.

The Other Side of the Ocean: Sunday

The Other Side of the Ocean. Sunday, August 09, 2015. This is the kind of day where you feel the weight of work - housework. Or, more accurately - farmette work. I am not referring to the usual farmhouse cleaning. That happens, yes, I do finish it and the place more or less shines. But there is that other work that must move forward. We cannot sit on our hands and rest on the weekend because if we don't labor now, then when? I'm up with dawn. In a good way. I tell him - I'll mow the lawn. I do a very tho...

The Other Side of the Ocean. Friday, July 31, 2015. Weekend at the farmhouse. For a long time now, this weekend has been reserved for Snowdrop. Not just the usual Snowdrop pop in, pop out, but for a full blown farmhouse visit, from early Friday until late Sunday. And so I'm up very early. With only a quick glance at the flowers. And quite an early breakfast on the porch. I start my Snowdrop weekend at her place. Are you up, little girl? Mistake. I should have started with the messy mush. I don't take my ...

The Other Side of the Ocean. Saturday, August 01, 2015. Weekend at the farmhouse. She is up and eager to play two hours before her usual wake up time. My granddaughter appears to like an early start to the day when she comes for a farmhouse visit. She plays in her crib for a while, but at 8:30, she wants to join the party! Who can blame her. It's a beautiful summer day here - warm, dry, with a light breeze and a sprinkle of puffy clouds. Let's try that combination of bananas, beets and blueberries! And b...

The Other Side of the Ocean. Wednesday, August 05, 2015. I am up early. This day offers the greatest number of unbooked hours before I take off next week and I want to put them to good use. It's a beautiful morning and I intend to finish preparing the expanded day lily patch and to put in a few transplants and the new acquisitions. I work for nearly six hours, with only one break - for breakfast of course. As the clock moves past the noon hour and I start tidying up the flower bed. Such a beautiful day!

The Other Side of the Ocean. Tuesday, August 04, 2015. Full, to the brim. There weren't enough hours today and yet, somehow, the day closed with a feeling of total satisfaction. Even if we could not take big steps forward, we surely took enough little steps to feel all stepped out. Big things, little things. Finish digging. Fix dripping toilet. Work on porch steps. Work on work. I'm sweating just thinking about it. Let's pause and admire a few day lilies. Alright, breakfast. Does Ed look strained? Back a...

The Other Side of the Ocean. Sunday, August 02, 2015. Weekend at the farmhouse. It's the last day of Snowdrop's visit. For those who look for general nuggets of thises and thats on Ocean. Rather than just grandma notes, move on! My day is full of my granddaughter. This post, therefore, belongs to her. Snowdrop is just a farm girl at heart. Wake up with the roosters. Again two hours earlier than her usual at home. Never mind, she's in a great mood! Eat your bananas, beets and blueberries, little one!

The Other Side of the Ocean: Friday

The Other Side of the Ocean. Friday, August 07, 2015. The pattern of each day doesn't change. And again I am writing far too late into the night. That's not the best time to transcribe thoughts into text. But, there was much to be done on this last day of the week! The hours ran away with the moon. But, oh, I do love my Hemerocallis (let's get proper here)! Okay, let's settle in for a good breakfast. Ed and Isis (who has ventured outside this morning) are waiting. But as I settle in to play with her.

The Other Side of the Ocean. Saturday, August 08, 2015. Sometime late Friday, Ed falls asleep on the couch and I drag myself to bed and give in to sleep there. But within an hour, I am awake. I glance at the clock. 1 am What's bugging me? Comes the groggy response. You forgot the cheepers. He goes out, locks them in and comes upstairs, now fully awake. And so I am as well. All through the night. By 6 he is up again, releasing the chickens. I fall asleep for an hour, not more. We have things to do. Ed tak...
