Le Quinquis is an old manor house which we purchased in 2001. It had not been lived in for over 60 years, so effectively all we bought were the walls! It consists of seven buildings, all attached to each other in an L shape. Most of the buildings had only ever had "terre battue",earth beaten floors, and there was no water supply, electricity, gas or sewage. An architect considered that the oldest parts date from about 1450, but we have records on the property that go back to 1243.

Most local people do not speak English, so a few simple words in French are useful, although it is not difficult to get around without it. People are very courteous and helpful, and for the most part this is a very user friendly environment. English newspapers are available in town. That’s fine - but how often are they ALL going to come?

For those who wish to hire a car in Paris, it is about a five hour drive. You initially follow signs to Nantes and then Le Mans, Rennes followed by Lorient.
