One thought on “ The New Good. July 9, 2014 at 11:42 pm. I love the idea of redefining ‘good’ and I think its really true that countries will change if we make them. I think with the rise of social media its becoming more and more easier to get the attention of governments! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

The Wild Places | Quirky Heart

https://quirkyheart.wordpress.com/2014/07/12/the-wild-places

Stories about acts of kindness – big and small. July 12, 2014. I was told that it was nature running its course and that I should leave the bird, but my family also knew that that just wasn’t an option. I’ve always loved animals and from a young age always wanted to take care of them when necessary. I felt somewhat guilty calling late at night, but I also knew that rescue operations had to feed baby animals every few hours, so I figured someone would have to be up (and perhaps tired and cranky! A few day...

Beautiful | Quirky Heart

https://quirkyheart.wordpress.com/2014/07/15/beautiful

Stories about acts of kindness – big and small. July 15, 2014. It’s really easy to get carried away in the day-to-day grind, and there’s always a long to-do list. Sometimes others can have a negative impact on you, and then you carry that energy forward. One kind word is all it takes to stop the downward spiral. When I saw this post, it struck me as something so simple and yet so true. One kind word is sometimes all it takes. This entry was tagged #actsofkindness. Milton’s Place →. Enter your comment here.

Milton’s Place | Quirky Heart

Stories about acts of kindness – big and small. July 31, 2014. When I started looking for a place, I heard a rumour of a room at Milton’s place. I had never heard of Milton. When I wanted to go back to school, the banks would not look at me. Milton co-signed for me. When I could not make payments on the account because I could not find work, he paid and never said a word. I owe him everything. This entry was tagged #actsofkindness. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Water 1 | Africa: It's not what you think

https://catherinerodd.wordpress.com/2014/06/27/water-1-4

Posted by Catherine Rodd. June 27, 2014. Water, or rather the lack of it, is a significant problem in most of sub-Saharan Africa. Every morning, we load up our 4×4’s with cases of bottles and hope we’ve counted accurately so it lasts the day. For every person we add during our trip, we need to subtract their ration from our stores. In the dry months, fights over water regularly break out between farmers and pastoralists (nomadic herders) over water. Sometimes people are killed. June 27, 2014 at 7:57 pm.

Food 2 | Africa: It's not what you think

https://catherinerodd.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/food-2

Posted by Catherine Rodd. July 9, 2014. Lunch at a community gathering in Luanda, Angola. We rarely eat in restaurants as they are few and far between. Instead, we eat in people’s homes. And it’s always a treat to meet families and share a meal. If the harvest is good, there is squash, yam, cassava, African potatoes eggplants, garlic, and carrots. Condiments don’t figure highly except for the local hot sauce, which each place claims is the best and only true hot sauce. But it’s a hard sell in the rural a...

Posted by Catherine Rodd. July 11, 2014. Children and their bike on their way home from school in Zambia. When an African colleague says, it’s only a short walk”, I prepare for a trek. A short walk is anything up to five miles, “a bit far” is over five miles and “it is too far for us to walk today” is more than ten miles. Carrying camera gear along narrow cow paths and uphill in the heat is tough, but then I come upon w. En carrying 20 litres of water. I know it’s all true. And as we hurtle over the ...

Posted by Catherine Rodd. July 5, 2014. High school students in Bailundo, Angola listening to their teacher. A new school is being planned. We’re standing in a crowded class room in central Angola. The wall is pock-marked with bullet marks, much of the school’s exterior crumbled from repeated rocket attacks during three decades of civil war. Food 1 | Africa: It's not what you think

https://catherinerodd.wordpress.com/2014/07/08/food-1

Posted by Catherine Rodd. July 8, 2014. Much of my travel is about food, or the lack of it in sub-Saharan Africa. Some areas are hit harder than others by drought, but there is no doubt that climate change is taking its large toll. On farmers and herders.
