Half Hectare: March 2011
http://halfhectare.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 29, 2011. So much for our promising grape crop this year. I scoffed when I read in a gardening magazine that one could tell if one's crops were ready if the birds were starting to eat them (I can think of far less disheartening ways to check ripeness than waiting for the birds! But I discovered the truth of it for myself when one afternoon recently a small but determined flock of waxeyes discovered the grapes ( see my previous post on this topic. Monday, March 28, 2011. The only downside i...

Half Hectare: Owen's knee-highs (or how I learned to cast off with three needles)
http://halfhectare.blogspot.com/2011/05/owens-knee-highs-or-how-i-learned-to.html
Sunday, May 1, 2011. Owen's knee-highs (or how I learned to cast off with three needles). I have finished Owen's sweater (read more about that here. And decided to complete the set with a pair of booties. I looked online for a good pattern and found Ruby. From Frog In Knots, which is a cool knitting blog that I will definitely go back to. I have finished the first in the pair and maybe it was because I was using homespun wool of variable thickness but I think these will be rather long booties!

Half Hectare: Minced beef, leek and cheese pie
http://halfhectare.blogspot.com/2011/09/minced-beef-leek-and-cheese-pie.html
Thursday, September 8, 2011. Minced beef, leek and cheese pie. We have been eating leeks from our garden that we planted late last summer in two batches. The first batch is ready to eat but the second batch, planted a couple of weeks later, is trailing far behind, pencil-thick rather than broomstick-thick! We enjoy leeks chopped, boiled and seasoned with chopped herbs and black pepper, but last night we had them in a pie with some mince and cheese. Here's what we did. 2 to 3 leeks, chopped.
