January 21st, 2008. In early December we spent 10 days in Thailand on our way back to the US. We scheduled three nights at a resort in Hua Hin, about a 3-hour drive south from Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand and three nights in Chiang Mai, up in northern Thailand. We book-ended this with three nights in Bangkok at the beginning and end of our stay. One of the fruits offered for breakfast is tamarind, still in the pod. If you’ve never had this, the flesh is dry like a prune and very tangy. T...On Sunday w...

Autumn Comes in Spring! January 28th, 2007. Autumn and Angela at the Harbour Bridge. The weather was somewhat cooperative for her stay, though cooler than normal. Autumn arrived on a Wednesday night, and Thursday turned out to be the coldest November day on record! Remember this is late spring down under.) It was a low of 45 that morning, with rain and wind all day (note that the day after Autumn left, we had temperatures reach near 100 degrees! Autumn at the Royal Botanic Gardens. Once we’d had en...

November 5th, 2006. Angela had her birthday on Saturday and, as is the apparent custom for us now, we headed down to Crown Street for a nice dinner. On my birthday, Angela took me to a nice French Bistro called Tabou. Which was very quaint and the food was fantastic. The bar had been set. It’s a rather high end Vietnamese restaurant and it lived up to its reputation. Waiter: We don’t have anything until 10:00, you can leave your name. Waiter: You need a reservation to sit tonight. What was the name?

Pasha Bulker beached in Newcastle. June 26th, 2007. Waves crash against the Pasha Bulker. We spent the day Saturday with Manuel going for a drive up to Newcastle. It was a sunny day, which is a rare thing these days. Our mission – apart from just getting out of the city for a while and seeing something different for a change – was to check out the big ship that was wedged onto the seashore in a recent storm two weeks ago. Angela and Manuel and a boat. View of the Pasha Bulker from the beach.

Jim and Ellen’s Big Oz Adventure. June 18th, 2006. After a bit of a blog hiatus, we’re back. My mom and dad came out to Australia for a 9-day trip in late May. They made a stopover in New Zealand for a week on the way and then spent 2 days in Tahiti on the way home. They covered quite a bit of geography, mainly in the form of islands. From the north and south islands and the rest of their Australia trip (New Zealand pictures begin on page 5, 2nd photo from the bottom left). Eric and I got up early (actua...
