Some of you know that the Media Conversions “shop” has been shutdown since 3/1 and that I'm recovering from Mitral valve replacement surgery that took place on 5/21. I'm happy to say that the recovery is going very well. I started cardiac rehab on 6/25 and I'm opening up the “shop” this weekend. Like the NextGen CS:R Frame that I've just completed. The Fixed 3-Leg Shoulders. My Fixed 3-Leg Shoulders (formerly called Shoulder Hubs) are a tab and slot conversion of Dave Everett's plans. The CS:R NextGen Frame. The frame is one logical place to start building a droid. Back in 2011 that's where my efforts started. What follows is the background information for how the NextGen design came about. If you are only interested in the design itself you can skip down to prototype design. R2 is Not Designed for Accessibility. I realized even then that accessibility to R2's internal parts was going to be both important and difficult to achieve. Just the opposite of what I was trying to achieve!

The skirt is actually an extension of the frame. Frame ring1 and ring0 (the skirt bottom) are glued together. I would wait to do that until after you have assembled the skirt onto ring0 since it will be easier to move the parts around that way. Basically I created a set of risers that have the shape of the skirt. The skirt design is more difficult than it looks. It's difficult to get the curved end pieces and the angled side pieces to line up with the ribs. This isn't the first skirt design that I made.
