Under the same bell jar. 시대’라는 개념을 개인의 삶에 들인다면, 일종의 마디쯤으로 생각해볼 수 있을 것이다. 시간을 축으로 하여 삶을 구성하는 마디들. 어느 한 시대와 그다음 시대는 반드시 연속적인 것은 아닐 터이고, 시대와 시대 사이에 그냥 텅 빈 구간이 존재하기도 하지만, 어쨌든 삶 속에서 무언가가 시작되고, 또 끝을 맺는 지점은 분명히 있다. 딱 떨어지지는 않더라도. 물론 이건 어디까지나 삶을 서사의 하나로 읽는다는 전제하에서 가능한 이야기이겠으나. 내게 어느 한 시대가 끝났다는 것은 그 누군가에 대한 마음을 내려놓을 수 있게 되었다는 뜻이었다. 그/그녀가 더는 내 세상의 중심이 아닌, 주변인 중 하나로 머무를 수 있게 될 때, 그 시대도 끝을 고했다. 작정하고 매듭을 지은 시대도, 정신을 차리고 보니 이미 끝나 있었던 시대도 있었지만. 누군가를 알게 되고, 호되게 앓고, 다시 ‘아는 사람’으로 끌어내리길 되풀이하며 산 셈이겠다. 에너지 넘치게도.
