Artopotamus: September
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2010/09/september.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Above:5th Grade's Op-Art Inspired Intensity and Value study using complimentary colors. Colored pencil, sharpie. Stippling added as a challenge for the students who want to do something extra. Last year's 5th grade probably would not have enjoyed this style of drawing, because they were the type who hated to use rulers. This year's group typically are more detail-oriented, and get a kick out of drawing precisely. December 8, 2011 at 6:31 AM.

Artopotamus: DIY Wet Wipes
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-wet-wipes.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Thursday, February 2, 2012. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. I use baby wipes for cleaning tables, hands, faces, floor, whatever. We go through a lot of them in the art room, but I try to use them sparingly. The "Dirtiest Baby Wipe". Contest works well for conserving wipes. So I searched Pinterest and found that you can use decent paper towels (the soft, durable kind) to make your own wet wipes. It worked great! Omigosh you guys, the paper towel roll cut i...

Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Monday, December 12, 2011. Celtic Knots and Radial Balance. Original link here: Tangle Patterns. So I showed them that step-by-step on the Elmo. I expected a train wreck. I told them this was an experiment, and I was going to see how they did before we even worried about turning this into a project or anything. I expected tears, and crumpled papers flying across the room, hitting me in the head. But, y'all. They did it! But here's what I did for my example:. I've been stress...

Artopotamus: Faux Batiks with First Grade, Cleanline Resist and Lumi Inkodye
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2014/03/faux-batiks-with-first-grade-cleanline.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Friday, March 28, 2014. Faux Batiks with First Grade, Cleanline Resist and Lumi Inkodye. I've had some interesting results with my faux batik project. We began by studying the batiks of Africa, which is our theme continent. For this grade level. I then gave the kids a piece of muslin fabric. By the way, if you ever have to cut 150 or so pieces of fabric for some reason, remember it is WAY easier to tear it than to cut it. After letting the glue drawings on the fabric dry, w...

Artopotamus: Wayne Thiebaud Inspired Cupcakes with Texture! (And the Joy of Pinterest)
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2011/11/wayne-thiebaud-inspired-cupcakes-with.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Friday, November 11, 2011. Wayne Thiebaud Inspired Cupcakes with Texture! And the Joy of Pinterest). At another table, I set up my "epic sparkle paint" or "lumpy paint" as I called it in one class. I just literally poured all the remnants of various specialty paints I had into a cool whip container and mixed it all up. I had mostly gold tempera, with various colors of glitter glue and loose glitter, and some "texture-it" paint. Finally, the PUFFY PAINT! This was so easy I a...

Artopotamus: Guess it's time for an update
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2010/08/guess-its-time-for-update.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Saturday, August 21, 2010. Guess it's time for an update. Here are the continent themes I use by grade level:. Kindergarten: Australia and Antarctica (they only do one or two projects related to these. Most of their year in art has to do with holding scissors correctly and not losing an eye. :) ). Second Grade: North America (I used to do Europe with them but they just couldn't quite fully understand that Zeus of ancient Greece was not real. Dont you love free stuff? Necess...

Artopotamus: Assessment Rubrics
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2011/10/assessment-rubrics.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Monday, October 3, 2011. Yes, assessment. How do we assess students in the elementary art room? BIG KID (Grades 3 and up) Assessment Rubric:. LITTLE KID (K-2) Assessment Rubric:. Anyway just a thought. At least self-assessment is helpful feedback for me, and it holds the kid somewhat accountable. January 3, 2012 at 4:16 PM. This will keep me from creating a rubric for each project. April 7, 2012 at 2:44 PM. I am in the same boat! IT is so frustrating! Mrs Hare/ Art teacher.

Artopotamus: August 2014
http://acquiringexpensivehobbies.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Teaching Art with Missa Katie. Saturday, August 9, 2014. Happy August, Everybody! School's already started back? Seems like it's earlier every year. Anyway, here's a little update on me. So it's much more conducive to arty-ness, even though it's still not the same as having an actual classroom. This location is pretty ideal for me, being near the gym and the stage for theatre things, and near the music room for collaborating with my Fine Arts buddies. But for now, HAPPY SCHOOL YEAR!
