I already know I love Laurel Snyder’s writing, from my earlier review of UP AND DOWN THE SCRATCHY MOUNTAINS. It’s modestly wise, often taking familiar insights and producing a refreshing phrasing. As one example, I really like the line: “sometimes.a person goes so far down a road, they can’t find the energy to walk back the other way.”. Rachel Ann Hanley: UP AND DOWN THE SCRATCHY MOUNTAINS

http://rachelannhanley.blogspot.com/2012/10/up-and-down-scratchy-mountains.html

Friday, October 19, 2012. UP AND DOWN THE SCRATCHY MOUNTAINS. Review of UP AND DOWN THE SCRATCHY MOUNTAINS by LAUREL SNYDER. Review based on an advance reading copy). While I read plenty of young adult literature, I don't often venture into middle reader ground. I tend to find anything below YA a little young for my tastes. However, skilled writers prove again and again that with the best stories, target age becomes irrelevant. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Art of Reading: Series.

Friday, June 26, 2015. WOMEN WHO THINK TOO MUCH. Review of WOMEN WHO THINK TOO MUCH: HOW TO BREAK FREE OF OVER-THINKING AND RECLAIM YOUR LIFE by SUSAN NOLEN-HOEKSEMA. Some people actually say, “Stop! While other case studies represent the cautionary tale side of spectrum: here’s what happens if you don’t address your overthinking. 8221; does more harm than good, leading us to dissect our lives in a manner unheard of in earlier generations. Friday, July 31, 2015. Review of THE FAIRY’S MISTAKE by GAIL CARSON LEVINE. First in THE PRINCESS TALES series). I adore Levine’s work. Known most for her first book ELLA ENCHANTED, Levine always hits that perfect balance between sweet and smart in her various fairy tale twists and retellings. One can easily read these slim middle grade novels in one sitting. They’re timeless stories, too - great read-a-louds for younger children and still entirely enjoyable as an adult. THE PRINCESS TALES series. The bo...

Friday, August 28, 2015. THE GIRL FROM THE WELL. Review of THE GIRL FROM THE WELL by RIN CHUPECO. Review based on an advance reading copy). From the first sentence, and then the first chapter, I feared I wouldn’t like this book. The opening scene is classic horror, a visceral description of a horrible man suffering a horrible fate. I don’t like horror. Not my taste. Luckily, I kept reading and the second chapter hooked me. Friday, August 21, 2015. Review of AFTERWORLDS by SCOTT WESTERFELD. So when I hear...

Fernleaf ~ Off the beaten track: February 2014

http://fernleaf67.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Friday, February 21, 2014. Insert catchy title here. In the past 2 weeks I have completed 4 different projects that I had plans to make, one knit and three crocheted. Which poked a small hole in my yarn stash. I have also cast-on for another sweater, which I bought yarn for last January and am very excited to make! So here's the latest batch of projects, sans the second bandana cowl that I made for myself. Mitts, Vancouver Fog.

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Monday, July 13, 2015. Homestead report: May/June 2015. It's been a busy six weeks or so since the last update, summer is WELL underway thanks to a very dry spring. Fruits are ripening 4-5 weeks early in the whole region and things are looking bleak for the rest of the summer, with potential hay shortages looming along with the drought. Here's a quick photo montage of the last few weeks:. Sassy sitting on a nest of eggs. Sketch in w...

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Thursday, April 30, 2015. I am so bad at this. And yet I keep plugging away at it. I just finished my latest knitting project, the Wayfarer Shawl. From a delightful book called Doomsday Knits. So excited, and so much work to do still! Speaking of excitement, we finally bought our ticket for the Mother Earth News Fair at the beginning of June! That's all for now! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Thursday, July 16, 2015. Garden update: July 2015. Yesterday was a great day for working in the garden, in the low 70's and cloudy with a light breeze it was a perfect day to finally get caught up on some weeding and path clearing that needed to be addressed out there, and I snapped a few updated pictures in between buckets of weeds. Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Black Cap: A quick, simple black wool beanie for my nephew-in-law? He loves hats, I hope that he loves this one too. No picture) This was a fun little project, a reminder of a great song for a lifelong friend. They Might be Giants has a song titled Birdhouse in Your Soul. Mammoth Mills Infinity Scarf. This scarf, although adorable, is one I probably won't make again (and being from the same book of pattern...

Fernleaf ~ Off the beaten track: What the future holds

http://fernleaf67.blogspot.com/2015/03/what-future-holds.html

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Saturday, March 21, 2015. What the future holds. Well here we are and it's officially spring already. I'm not sure how that happened so fast. Despite being home taking care of Ethan and the animals I still find that time seems to be going by faster than when I was working part-to-full-time. Egads. The battle against the rats seems to have turned in our favor, some work around the barn, aggressive trapping and relentless hole-pluggin...

http://fernleaf67.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. This project just seemed burdened with trouble after trouble for me, casting on the wrong number of stitches, wonky buttonholes, awkward color changes, a tight thumb gusset and other issues. I do think that they turned out nice, especially the lovely shell buttons I found for them, but after all the difficulties that I had with them I'll certainly never be using that pattern again. In the queue: Twin Leaf Loop.

http://fernleaf67.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Well my yarn finished up it's last stint in the freezer a week ago, but when I finally pulled it all out I wasn't excited about all the potential that yarn represented. We also discovered more beetles in a room that previously appeared to be beetle-free (and isolated.) Which means tomorrow I have to take a look at the raw wool from my sheep and get the washed stuff bagged up somehow to at least isolate t...

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Saturday, May 24, 2014. Confessions of a yarn hoarder and fiber snob. So the LYS tour was last week.what's an LYS tour you ask? Thursday, May 22, 2014. But alas, even having four walls around them the rabbitry was far from complete, and due to my increasing difficulty in working with the homestead due to my growing belly plus the never-ending list of competing priorities present on any small far with a limited income and the rabbit ...

Fernleaf Off the beaten track. Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog. Friday, May 15, 2015. Well our garden is well under way, which is a relief considering that we were able to get started over a month earlier than last year! We finished the last beds this week, and although we have everything more or less hashed out and 75% planted, things could always change for those last few areas, and not everything is rigidly planned. Sunday, November 15, 2009. Love in living color. Our engagement photos were taken last week in Dallas by the fabulous Brooke Ogilvie! Saturday, November 14, 2009.
